My dog got hurt last Saturday night, didn't come home (I live rural.)  Sunday I finally found him, he was holed up with a sore leg.  I brought down to the house and he was favoring his right rear leg.  It didn't seem horribly serious (no puncture wounds, no swelling) so I gave him some aspirin.  This morning he was cheerful but his leg was swollen about 20% so I took him to my vet this afternoon.  She xrayed, no broken bones, dxed soft tissue injury.  Gave anti inflammatory, and antibiotics.  He did have an elevated temperature (103.5)

Brought him home, gave him his antibiotics, she said to immobilize him so I put him in a small kennel and went and made dinner.  I just came out to check on him, his leg is swollen about 30% more than when we brought him home.

I tried to call the vet but they do not have contact numbers for after hours.  We're rural so there's not much I can do until the AM.

Will he let you put ice bag on his leg?

Yes, we are doing 30 minutes on/30 off.  He is eating and drinking water.

I would take him out of the cage since it seemed that increased swelling. Check temp. If it gets much higher I would get him to a clinic if possible.

Vets in my area have and answering service and will call you back if you have a problem (if you are a client). Cities have ER clinics.

No after hours help sucks.

He is in a kennel, a typical 9' x 7' dog kennel. I was wondering if keeping him immobile was a culprit.

I left a message.  Thank you for the suggestions!!

No, we had her shave his leg before she xrayed.
