[ARCHIVED THREAD] - I finally fent (Page 1 of 2)

So I've been waiting to break even on the car I'm in (09 Civic) to trade in for something more practical. A 4 door with some kind of off road capacity, I had settled on an Xterra after getting reviews from those who own them and from the 4 wheelers here.
Was driving to dinner last night with the girlfriend and heard the front tire making noises, nothing going on, ride felt smooth and unchanged so we went and I drove it home. Got home pulled the tire off and the shock was fubar'd. Well today is my only day off for the month and I need to get this shit fixed in a hurry and the only place around town who will do repairs without an appointment is the dealership. Take it up there and it's going to be a $400 repair. Car needs tires as well which would be another $400+ and the fluids need to be flushed. So the damned thing needed more than $1000 in repairs. At that point I said fuck it. I don't care if I'm in the red on this car I'm trading the fucker in. They had a new Xterra in the day before. 2006 With 5k less miles than my Civic. Only down side is it is a RWD not a 4WD. I can live with that for now. The Xterra is $3k more to pay off than the Civic would have been so I'm not completely unhappy with the deal, and I finally have something that won't explode if it goes off pavement. Best part about it is the sales guy is an Arfcommer also. So to everyone who helped me out with advice in my previous topics about the Nissans, thank you for your wisdom and insight. Soon I'll give this one over to the girlfriend and get a 4WD for myself! Oh and sales guy (name retracted) if you read this, thank you for a smooth transaction! For pics of GF check my Colorado vacation post in team, I ain't posting that shit again! TL;DR Current car that I've been trying to pay down to trade in broke, sick of chasing the dragon so traded car for SUV I have been eying up and have been asking Arfcom advice on. Move was almost lateral so I got a decent deal, sales guy was a fellow Arfcommer. He prefers beans. |

They still need to detail the truck and make minor repairs. Will pick up on Friday.

Sounds silly to me, but I'm glad you're happy with the deal. It is silly, but I've been driving around in a car I disliked for a very long time trying to get it to a place where I wouldn't lose my ass on a trade. Just couldn't handle dropping a G on a car that I was still upside down in when I could roll it over into something I wanted. If it was any more than the 11 I paid I would have kept the Honda and repaired the damned thing. I just really had a hard time dropping any more money into a car that has plastic motor mounts though. PSA adults, don't let your children who are almost adults who still think like teenagers buy cars. They will regret the decision in a couple of years |

Wanted a 4x4 and got an XTerra? Hahahah!
You will miss the MPGs of a Civic. Why not buy something better than an XTerra? Quoted:

I am truly wondering why you are laughing, many of the 4 wheeling forums and 4 wheelers I have spoken with have all had positive things to say about 4WD Xterra's as low budget off roaders. Edit: Because everything else is overly fucking expensive. |

$1000 in repairs, part of which is tires? Wah. I just spent $1200 on a freaking timing belt and still need control arm bushings (another $900). It's paid for, though. I'm driving it until the wheels fall off. I understand, I'm just sick of dumping money into something that I dislike. Between me and the SO we'll drive this until it falls apart so there is that. |

Yeah, the "don't like" part is definitely a problem. I love my little car, so that helps when it starts costing me money. |

Well congrats on the newish ride. Thank you. Wait, you bought the 2009 Civic new and were upside down in it?
1. How can anyone ever be (financially ) upside down in a Civic?
2. Did you refinance the equity out of this car (multiple times) since buying it? |

Shocks, tires and fluids are wear & tear / maintenance items. Not repairs.
The Xterra will need them eventually as well. The higher the mileage the sooner you'll need to do it. I looked over a 2011 Pro4x on Sunday. Seemed like a good value for what you get, not sure where the hate comes from. |

Couldn't find any used 4Runners that were cheap enough to justify not just buying a new one. Bought a low mileage 2011 Pro4X for 1/2 the price of a new 4Runner. |

I love my 2012 Pro 4X. Well, except for the mpg
Good luck OP! Quoted:

You failed trying to pay off an '09 civic with worn tires, poor maintenance, and bought a gas guzzling SUV (all while at a dealer)?
That dealership is going to spend about $350 (their cost) in parts and labor tops to turn around and sell it to someone who will probably happily drive it for another 5 years for thousands more than you gave it away for. |

2. Did you refinance the equity out of this car (multiple times) since buying it? Just the one time, from the dealer @7% to the credit union at 2.9%. Bought a house in between then and now or I would have just paid the thing off entirely 2 years ago. |

You can buy a lot of used Cherokees for $11K+tax... True, however the only ones I was interested in are the early to mid 90's and they are very uncommon and hard to come by around here. This also needs to be a daily driver for the next 18 months so I needed something a little more reliable currently. This suits my needs and I can eventually pass it to the gf as she likes it as well and will be in need of a new car soon. |

When it's all said and done I abused (poor choice of words) neglected the Honda because I disliked it. It wasn't smart, but I figured making repairs and upgrades to the home was a more practical use of my money between refinancing it and now. I have a shit ton more equity in the house than I do the car. |

Maybe you should talk with a financial planner. It will probably do you some good. Now, with the addition of the extra money on the car. I will be debt free except the house by July of next year instead of May. I believe I'm doing alright. |

So you bought a RWD vehicle you wanted some off-road in? Likely you were upside down on your civic and even more upside down now? All this for a $300 repair? Congrats I guess.... It will get me further off road than the civic for the time being, and the girlfriend wants it when I finally get a 4WD, her car needs to be replaced within the next year or so. I was trying to plan ahead a little. She won't be using it for any kind of off road purpose. |

You do know that "Chasing the Dragon" is a reference to smoking opium... right? I'm aware of what it is. This particular usage was in reference of chasing the break even point ("or the ever elusive high") on the vehicle and always having something hinder me from achieving it. It seemed to fit as a metaphor, at least to me anyway. |
