I've got a few Sigs that need new night sights, and a couple other pistols I'd like to add them to.  How hard is swapping them out, and does it require any special tools?  Is it better to just take it to a smith?

You can either use a sight pusher, like the Sig or MGW sight pusher, or drift it in and out with punch and hammer.

Even with the sight pusher, it can be tricky.

High quality sight pusher and some kind of vise, oh and cloth/towels as not to scratch the slide.

Most sight pushers are 500-600 bucks.

The cheap ones will mar your guns.

I believe there is a member with a website that will install them for around $20 a set. XDman maybe?

I'll probably look for someone local, I've got quite a few I need to get done.  Do they test for accuracy when installed?  I've had good luck with all my stock sights so far.

I've done several Glocks and 2 Sigs with a punch and a hammer.....I bought the MGW Glock tool awhile back, its worth the money even though it spends most of its time a drawer, especially if you're doing several guns.

I've done 4 Glocks now with the MGW tool, its easy and I haven't scratched anything, didn't even rub the painted letters off the side of the sights.

Use sight pushers only.   Never use a punch & hammer with night sights.  You don't want those glass vials to break.

What's the best sight tool that will work for most pistols?

Here's the one for Sig. You can find them used for a lot cheaper

I use this one and have changed 50 or more pistols out with it.

I bought the universal kit but have never needed the part that holds the slide down.

I have this one http://www.sightpusher.com/Handgun-SIght-Tool.html

It works great.

ETA: I always put a piece of cardboard on the slide between the claps and have never had a mark.
