Download a Start Button emulation program.  And it will be just like windows 7.  Or not.

Windows eight is really making me consider switching to Apple. As someone who grew up on windows Microsoft must have been smoking crack when they devised eight. Otherwise any of the reputable manufacturers will work

Windows 8.1 is fine stock, as soon as you learn how to use the interface. It's much easier to navigate the OS in 8.1(IMO).

Wanted to switch to apple try 1K to start new Dell $279
ETA: last laptop $2500 (Gateway)

I watched a few youtube videos, it's not as bad as I thought it would be, still a learning curve

It's really not. Boot to desktop is fine. I'm running 8.1 on my desktop at home. I almost never see the Metro interface.

I would have suggested getting a touch screen model, 8.1 does work pretty well with them.

I run Start8 and disable all the metro crap.    Haven't found anything I need that's metro and don't see any reason to use it on a laptop.  It'd be different on a touch screen without a keyboard.
