Goat fuckers gonna goat fuck. Piss on the Middle east and any of their "moral" rules; even if its wrapped in a fancy, modern cloak. Just reminds me how good we have it here, despite the communist invasion. |
| I live in Dubai currently and have for awhile, working as a DoD contractor. Whoever says they actually like this place never ventures outside the tourist areas. Once you REALLY live here, you learn to hate it just like every other sharia-law governed Middle Eastern shithole. Sure, they have some neat skyscrapers (mostly empty) and alot of expensive malls, but outside of that, it's all sub-continent workers slaving away, pinoy supermarkets, and work camps. |

I thought Dubai was a shithole. Passport-slave workers, empty buildings, filthy water, and most of the city was sort of decrepit.
Malls were nice, and I saw more marble stone there in one place than anywhere else I've ever been...but even in the gorgeous shopping palaces, the place feels like an American strip mall that is going out of business...what we used to call "dirt malls". Movie theatres...assigned seating. Fuck that! Shops shutting down in the middle of the day to pray for several hours...not my bag. In the 90's, all the dance clubs were filled with men. Literally, there would be no women in them...and I swear, that's what they preferred. Some of their techno was good, though--I'll give 'em that. |

About those artificial islands.
That's one proposed solution for the Gaza strip; creating an artificial island to physically cut off Hamas from Israel. Sounds a bit wacky (and expensive) to me, but it's been mentioned. If nothing else, that's thinking outside the box. |

Your post sums Dubai up nicely. Although, It is the only place I've seen a Lambo parked next to Ferrari in person. |
| Lived there for 4 years. There are good things and bad things about living there, just like anywhere else. We got there at a good time and left at a bad time; it was at a time when growth was out of control. But when we first got there it was like Hong Kong in the 80's, a great expat hideaway. 1/2 of the buildings between the trade center and defence round about hadn't been build yet, The Greens and Arabian Ranches were still in phase one and you could drive from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi non stop - usually around 200km/h. We went from there to SA and found Africa much more to our liking. It offered a much more grounded and healthy lifestyle over the flash-in-the-pan way of living found in Dubai. Beirut, on the other hand, was awesome. |

You need to go to your states hot spots at night... especially high plated dinner restaurants or clubs... you'll see the two... |
