Has anyone used the lifetime free sharpening services from Benchmade? I have a mini Griptilian that could definitely use some TLC, but I don't want to send it in if it's gonna take a month to get it back.

Any experience with them here?

I have a Mini Presidio but have never used Benchmade's sharpening services. OP, you need one of these:

It's a Smith's sharpening system, they sell for around $20 at Cabela's. They should call these things "The knife sharpening system for people who suck at sharpening knives". I've been using mine for years and while I've since learned how to use a normal stone, this Smith's rig is still great for putting a quick edge on your knives.

I used it a long time ago.  I managed to really fucked up the tip on one of my knives.  A couple bucks shipping and a few weeks later it was returned to me good as new.

Is the blade just dull or is it fucked the fuck up?

They're awesome. They even replaced my worn out pocket clip when i sent it in.

They turned one of mine around in about 1 week. They did an excellent job on a heavily used knife.

I did it about 2 months ago.
It took about 2-3 week there and back and it didn't cost me anything other than original shipping.

Nice knives from a good company.

As a Authorized Benchmade Dealer, I can tell their services are top notch. If you take your knife to a AD they will send if for you and then don't even have to pay shipping.

Top notch.

Sharpened, cleaned, lubed and returned quickly.

I've even rebladed a knife with them to get rid of icky combo edge blades.

I need to send my EDC in.  It is really screwed up from me stupidly letting the idiot at Bass Pro "sharpen" it for free.  Lesson learned.  Unfortunately, it is an auto which makes sending it in harder since they won't ship it back to me.

Sent one in around feb and got it back almost exactly a month later, but they did some minor laser etching on the blade while it was there, so that may have added time on. Great service.

oh and i have an old lansky system, turns out that and a 10 dollar leather strop is pretty good.  Like shave hair off your arm good.

I use a sharpmaker on most of my knives, so have never used Benchmade's service, but i regularly cruise Blade forums and other places and i rarely ever see anyone complain about their service.  Complain about price hikes, off center blades out of the box and a few others, yes, but everyone that sends it in tends to report having a more than satisfactory experience.
7/18/2014 10:07:40 AM EDT

I'm quite familiar with the Lansky system and use it 90% of the time on all my knives. This one, I thought "What the heck. I'm gonna give them a go just to see how they do". Sounds like everyone has had pretty good experiences with their service in the past. I'll have to drop it off at the post office early next week to get the ball rolling.

I didn't realize that they do blade replacement. I also have the combo edge on my Griptilian and really regret that decision. Do you remember approximately what it cost to have the new blade put on? If it's not much cheaper than just purchasing a new knife, I'll probably go with the new knife option.

Will an authorized dealer send it in for me if I did not buy from them?  I'd feel like I was taking advantage of them.

25 bucks and they update it to the current steel.

35 for a black blade.

The D2 710 in that pic used to be a nasty combo edge.

It would take longer to box is up address it and put it in the mail than it would take to sharpen. Not really seeing the point

I typically sharpen my knives on my diamond plates and strops but sometimes getting a factory edge is nice. Especially on recurved blades.

Just went through this about a month ago. The day I sent them to the day I received them back was a little over a week. Super fast service, and they sharpened them to a razor's edge. They also cleaned them up nicely. If only I could send in non-Benchmades for them to sharpen.

And just to throw in a couple pics for the fun of it...

They're cheap, super fast, and the replace all the worn small parts, and oil your knife. I need to go dig mine up and send them in now that you put that thought in my head.

And on some of these high wear resistance steels if you're using anything other than diamonds you're gonna take all day.

Well maybe that explains why my cheap little sharpener won't work well.

Very probable.

I got a sweet deal on my Manix 2 in S110v  and skipped a long preorder wait because the guy couldnt sharpen it using his stones. A couple minutes on my diamonds and it's a lightsaber and continues to be one I've been abusing the shit out of it and its still sharp as hell

They don't require but it's highly recommended in my experience

S30V and D2 drove me to diamonds.

Trying to reprofile using Arkansas stones and ceramics took too long.

Especially trying to hold small angles over long periods.

Diamonds FTW.

I would still be working at it (2 months later) on my S110v reprofile.
