I was cleaning my new 20" upper and it seemed like the gas tube was rattling slightly when i clean it.

Never had this happen with my carbine length on my 556 and 300.

Tube is installed and pinned properly and fits through the barrel nut properly.

This is my first rifle length system and just am wondering.

Rattling in the upper or front sight base?  Upper is normal, the hole is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the tube.  A roll pin secures the tube in the front sight base so that should be tight.

No issue.  It just means your barrel nut is lined up perfectly and is not pushing the tube up against one side or the other in the receiver passage.

When indexing a barrel nut, I actually rely on the gas tube rattle to let me know when I got the nut lined up perfectly to one of the slots.   When it rattles, stop.

What if the gas tube itself isn't perfectly straight?

If it's not straight, it won't rattle when you have it inserted into the gas block and through the receiver hole.   That's another check the rattle provides.

I am sorry, it is where it enters the upper receiver

I figured the rattle was OK, i just wanted to make sure.  FOr some reason my carbines dont do it, at least not like the rifle.

I guess i need to check the indexing of my carbine uppers.
