Howdy all. I'm considering a bicycle for fitness. Need cardio and can't run due to old injuries. Just something basic and cheap. Recommendations?
TIA, Ray

Figure out the ballpark frame size you need, then haunt craigslist.

I picked up a Trek 2300 aluminum/cf road bike in exactly my size for $200.  $250 more for a total once-over at the local bike shop, and I'm still hundreds of dollars ahead.

Search Craiglist and buy a used Trek, Specialized or Giant. They all make pretty good stuff with decent components. Look for rust, dry rotted tires from bikes sitting too long in the garage. Many people have barely used bikes sitting around and will sell them at a good price.

Walmart bikes suck. You will not be happy with them.

SE Racing Big Ripper. Basically a giant size version of the PK Ripper BMX bike with 29" wheels. "Cool factor" on my bikes compels me to ride them more

Another great ride is a Redline Monocog 29er. Find a dealer and test ride one.

Yup.  I avoid wal-mart like the plague.  But, dr told me to start getting 30 mins exercise every other day.  I hate running, and that shit is hard on the body.  Went to wallyworld, bought a nice Tactical Matte Black mountain bike and a matching helmet, out the door for less than $150 bucks.

and prepare to replace it afterwards........IF you are serious in your plains.  Better to spend and waste $100 than $500

Look on craigslist and buy something old. It will be well-built, robust, and cheap. It won't be fancy, shiny, or lightweight. But it will take the abuse and fit your budget. You can find good, serviceable bicycles for under $100.

It will fall apart in the first or second time of riding. Not only are the components crap but they're put together wrong.

This.

Buy once; Cry once.

Research and learn what the good brands / models / components are in the (MINIMUM) $500 - $1500 range would be.  THEN, hit craigslist.

That's 2 very solid choices. Simple is better.

ETA: didn't see that you want a low cost bike.

Cruise the yard sales and find a used 10 speed that is your size.

If the derailer is shit, convert it to a single speed.

This guy goes a bit far with new components. But you can build a cool single speed really cheap.
