Would it be cheaper on the taxpayers for your daily uniform to be the evil, dreaded cargo pants, nice pair of comfortable boots, and a polo type shirt?
I really see no point for a dress type uniform for patrol guys/gals. |

Polyester sucks. Hot in the summer and the wind cuts through in the winter. They also get picks easier than blends. |

my uniform runs about 120.00 for a shirt and pair of pants. <5.11 taclites> my polo shirt ran about 25.00. it wouldn't save a hell of a lot of money, i'd have less cargo room and most likely destroy a lot more shirts on duty.
As a reserve my department doesn't buy our uniforms. i have the option of either. |

Saves about $600 per officer depending on uniform issue numbers. (how many shirts etc) Those damn dress pants are $70 EACH. Thanks. If you're doing a fancy college-level study, post a link to the published paper so we can all take it to our execs to help support getting rid of our current uniforms. |

I would also think that interactions with the public would go much smoother due to more comfortable clothing. I know when my clothes "stick" to me from high heat and humidity it puts me in a pissy mood. |

Just notice the local guys here seem to be going to the cargo/polo outfit. |

There is always the fact that my uniform is made out of polyester, couple that with the fact that I , as part of my job duties, respond to fires.. Have you ever seen polyester withstand a fire? Neither have I. I have seen several co workers get burned with the uniform burned into their skin. They told me that getting the wound cleaned was a lot of fun
Reason why dept keeps them....they press better than cotton and look nicer

Either way the same amount of money was being spent. I didn't like the approved cargo pants or the polyester pants so I wore unauthorized 5.11 pants. |

I guess I have a little bit of an issue with it, just as I have an issue with cruisers that are
not clearly marked as LEO vehicles. It shouldn't take more than a glance for JQP to recognize someone as an officer. I have no problem with them dressing more comfortably. I just think it's important for them and us that there is no question about their position. "Hey you stop" --- "Ha ha f$*k you security guard guy........oops" |

I was a Reserve Deputy (fully sworn and commissioned, just not paid) with my Sheriff's department for a few years. The regular deputies wore very traditional cop uniforms, we wore cargo pants and polos. Damn near every time we were working together and got approached by other cops or other people, the reserve guy was the one that got addressed... everyone assumes the guy in the comfy clothes is in charge. |

I think taxpayers have bigger issues than police uniforms... The point is that there is a contingent that complains about police wearing cargo pants and not wearing "dress blues" daily. I can see the idea of reducing uniform costs. The military went to something other than dress uniforms for daily wear and that resulted in the various service's "light duty uniforms" or "office duty uniforms" if you will. When I enlisted that was the AF tan 1505 uniform that was changed to the light blue shirt with dark blue pants. But for police forces, I think that cargo pants are a more expensive choice than simple work pants like Dickies. I think that the idea of polo shirt, work pants and work boots makes a more sensible work wear choice for patrol officers than cargo pants just because of practical purposes. Certainly a lighter weight, cooler uniform that would be more suited to an officer walking a beat or patrolling in a vehicle. Save the cargo pants for the SWAT crew and days when patrol officers have to go out into the field like the Dorner manhunt, not everyday wear. |

Adjoining department at my old job wore 511 pants and polos with embroidered badge and duty belt on the weekends. It looked pretty damn sharp, comfortable as hell, and the public reacted positively.
We wear the full polyester uniform at my department. I can usually circumvent this by wearing my bike uniform and putting my cannondale on my bike rack in the summer. I'll ride for a couple hours and then get to wear shorts and a polo for the remaining ten hours. The only problem with this is that the cargo pockets on my LT Dangle shorts often make me want to violate the Constitution and kill family pets. I can usually resist the power of the pockets though. Usually.

| I have worn and been issued both. I much preferred a polo and 5.11's. With that being said I do like a nice uniformed professional look. You can look like a soup sandwich in anything you wear, but most guys tend to look more professional in a standard dress uniform. It is much cheaper to outfit in pants and a polo as compared to Class A uniform. |
