Chap had a great FLIR

Yeah, it picked up everything and was easy to use and track with.  It was a pretty cool MOS.  I was also 16S qualified.  I've run across very few people who know what Chaparral was, much less 16P's.  Were you 16P?

I did get to play on a decommissioned Chap with a CFT.  I've live fired stingers from the Avenger and MANPAD.  I have since become a Field Artillery officer.  I really enjoyed my ADA time, though.

I never got to live fire a Stinger The closest I got to firing one was using simulators that fired a projectile out of the tube about 100 m or so.  I did have a lot of fun in the MTS  I think the last of the Chaparrals were retired around 1998 or so.

Loved the MTS, especially the downtown Baltimore scenario.

When I got out in 1992 there weren't any scenarios on the MTS, just computer generated aircraft.  You must've used it wayyyy after I got out.  Explain some of the scenarios and how they worked.

Backgrounds mostly.  One of them had downtown Baltimore as a backdrop.   There was a Kuwait background, a few for Germany I think.  I haven't seen one in years.

I only used an MTS in Germany and the only background was an open area with forest in the distance.  No city backgrounds or anything.  The trainer had wires in it that would register hits and misses and tell you what mistakes you made, like if you didn't super elevate, use IFF, were too slow, etc.  Is 16S (MANPADS) even an MOS anymore?

I have a few times(nice run up & down), but I didn't do any training at Bliss.  Was just stationed there for a random year long school.

I am an oddity in this, as are a couple hundred others.

I was a 19D Cav Scout and the day I showed up at MEPS to ship out, my orders to Basic said Ft Bliss instead of Ft. Knox.  Much confusion ensued.

Not a mistake, not a change of MOS, the Army in it's infinite wisdom decided that two troops of scouts would do Basic and AIT there.

March to August of 1989.

Ah, that was an all-in-one thing..

In 83, there were 2 BT battalions in 1st ADATB. 1st Bn fed directly to Bliss AIT schools, 2nd Bn shipped elsewhere for AIT.

Yep, one-station training.  They brought in AIT instructors and drills from Ft. Knox and reserve units.  Hello White Sands and Dona Anna!

IIRC, The only time we handled weapons at Bliss wasn't at Bliss. For weapons qualification, Basic trainees went out to McGregor Range.  I guess it made sense at the time to keep people that had never handled rifles away from the densely populated area that surrounded Logan Heights. Some companies bivouacked in GP tents, we were in shelter halves for that 2 weeks. Damn cold at night in the desert.

On guard duty, I defended a motor pool full of Vulcans with a metal baton. I kept wondering what kind of force intruders would be coming in with if they actually wanted to take those fuckers, and here I was toting a stick. LOL

I'd sure as hell welcome a post full of troops there with heavy firepower these days, all of them pointed towards Juarez.

Lol, I did guard duty on a motor pool full of APC's and ITV's a few times and I didn't get a baton.  They told us to watch out for people jumping the fences to steal stuff.  Very reassuring having two of walking around, afraid to put our hands in our pockets.

The Hill - I grew to hate the sand pit.

In AIT we were out at the same area as you and took lots of looong walks in the desert learning to patrol and land nav and we ran across all kinds of cool stuff, shot-up drones were the favorite.  I wish we could have had cameras, saw some neat things, like the 747 with the space shuttle piggy-backed taking off from somewhere nearby.

I did a roving guard on a POV lot for a deployed unit at Bragg once.  We got Ax handles with rape whistles attached

Come on guys, who else put some extra force in their voice when calling out "Hey, Hey Captain Jack!" when marching by E 2 1?  (Sign said the CO was a Captain... first name was something or other... long time ago... Jack).   :)

My asst platoon sergeant seemed to have a perverse delight in starting that cadence up whenever we were on that street.  :)

We had to have taken basic together or at the very least been within a cycle of each other. During the two weeks camping I remember my DI killing a rattlesnake and using the skin on his staff...DI Nickolson if I remember right. DI Ware and DI Johnson were my other two DI's.
I remember one of the first time DI's (DI Hernandez??) had his cover put on a post about 100m out and all the M60's trained on it. After what must have been several thousand rounds fired at it, he picked up the little bit that was left and PT'd us for ruining his cover.
Also remember PVT Core walking off the line with a round in the chamber right in front of me. Not GTG!!!
