A friend called today and said she had a snake in the yard that she needed me to take care of.  Didn't know it was a rattler...my 12ga took the head off and then my knife took care of the rattles, which she kept.  About 2.5-3' long.

(not my shoe in the pic)

Every reason to kill em.    If it doesn't have either two legs or 4 legs then I perceive it as something trying to kill me and I will respond in kind.

It was rattling pretty hard at me and I was 10 ft away.  Timber Rattlers are not something I mess with.

You did the right thing with the snake.
You really messed up when you bought those shoes. (claiming it's not your shoe isn't going to work.)

My rattlers always have a gardening accident...with a shovel...right behind the jaws. Then they get skinned, and the vultchers get lunch with the remains. Visitors always get excited to see what lives in my back yard.

Good shoot. Poisonous Venomous snakes, on my property, get zapped. As posted above, plenty of good snakes around (and two bad ass cats) to do the rodent work. Not worth the risk of the kids getting bit.

The lady had already gotten it agitated.  It was between the driveway where I pulled up and her front porch, which is where she was.

I am up to 19 rattlesnakes in two trips so far this year.  I'd have found a lot more if I had looked at some den sites in April.

we have them here in Virginia, neighbors killed 2 this week. Must be a den around here.

I guess its time to break out the Tannerite and find the den and take care of the rest of them....

That's more extreme than my philosophy which is:

"I won't eat it if it has fewer than two legs or more than four"

I have always Really really wanted to try rattlesnake. Hs anyone here ever killed a rattler for safety reasons and decided to gut, skin and eat it right then and there ?

So the spiders, scorpions, and centipedes are safe.

I wouldn't have killed it....but then, I like snakes.

Not what I'd call a 'good shoot' but I'm not going to condemn anyone for taking out a viper.
The non-herp guys aren't going to know endangered species from a distance.

Probably the right action given the circumstances
