[ARCHIVED THREAD] - The Wire (Page 1 of 2)

| I just finished watching this on Amazon Prime. It is a pretty good police drama series. It runs 5 episodes. Set in Baltimore, a bunch of detectives use some NSA type tricks to catch dopers, mobsters, killers, etc. It has good character development, and some action without going over the top. I suggest checking it out. |

5 seasons, not 5 episodes. And it is an amazing documentary. The names were changed to protect the guilty, everyone who was somebody in the 80s-00s is either playing a role in the show or their story is being told. Kharn Yep, several real detectives and the old preacher that hangs around Bunny and the Mayor in the last couple of seasons was the real Avon Barksdale of his day. |

Kharn In countries where they drive on the wrong side, they call seasons, episodes. Or something, I don't know. |

Many critics consider it to be the best series ever created. And they would be correct. Followed closely by Breaking Bad and the Sopranos. All three shows sucked, it wouldn't matter if you watched the episodes on shuffle, there is no fucking plot to care about. |

If those 3 suck, what's your top 3 series? |

You think The Shield, and Justified suck too?

Quoted: What up Bird ETA: Fun fact time. Most people think Omar is whistling 'The Farmer and the Dell' due to the line above. But he is actually whistling 'A Hunting We will Go' by Elmer Fudd. He said it in an interview by Opie and Anthony.

The Sopranos had a few good episodes, or seasons, or whatever you guys cal them, but was generally poor towards the end, and anything interesting was left hanging with no follow up or closure.

It is a very overrated show. IMHO. I agree. A friend loaned me the series on DVD. My wife and I almost stopped watching after episode 4 of season 1, we were so bored and unimpressed. But, I felt obligated to finish the series since my friend and a few coworkers couldn't stop talking about it. Overall, it was okay. The acting was good and there were some great characters. But, to me, it is like the Seinfeld episode about The English Patient: everyone raves about it, but I can't figure out what the big deal is. |

I'm 8 episodes into season 1 and the show feels unbearably slow. This thread is the first time I've heard the show described as a documentary, and that's exactly what it feels like. A multi-hundred hour documentary. zzzZZZZ! Based on all the hype, I think I was expecting more of a "dramatic thriller" in the same vein as Law & Order. There are no cliff hangers here, the story just rolls along from one boring workday to the next. I was really hoping things would pick up but it doesn't sound like it! It was nice to see HBO gave a lot of the actors from "Oz" another shot. I loved Oz. Probably one of the Top 5 greatest series in my book. So far, The Wire is faaar behind Breaking Bad, Sopranos, and Oz (IMHO). |

There were an estimated 35,000 drug addicts in Baltimore when I started school there in 1994.
By 1997, the estimate had risen to 70,000 drug addicts - in a city with a shrinking population that fell below 700,000 for the 1st time since the end of WW II. That is a lot of drugs, and a LOT of addicts. The Wire has MANY subtle political hints that go all the way to the top (not just Baltimore, but U.S. politics). Can't say I miss living in Baltimore. |

I'm trying to like it, since it's on Prime. I just....can't....quite....get....into....it. Breaking Bad and the Sopranos are both far, far better. I think '24' though cheesier, is more fun to watch. I started it a while ago and almost got to the end of the first season then life happened. I need to make another stab at it. I'm undecided if it deserves all the Arfcom accolades. |

. You think The Shield, and Justified suck too?
