Great Movie
My son and I have watched it together about twice a year since he was six. He is ten now, and currently working obsessively through the last of Riordan's work as a carrot to lead him towards the classical standards. When he finishes those fantasy novels, he and I will be moving into O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series together to steel him further towards tackling Homer by middle school. |
| I read all the books, which (after getting used to O'Brien's writing style) I thoroughly enjoyed. I thought the movie was great and used bits and pieces from across numerous books to make a new and enjoyable story. I had hoped they were going to make another film. |

I thought the movie was great and used bits and pieces from across numerous books to make a new and enjoyable story. I had hoped they were going to make another film. I have been working on the books, when I travel I always check a couple out at the library. Writing style is definitely interesting. Good all around movie, I enjoyed it. If you search Youtube there are deleted parts of the movie you can watch as well. Can't link from work. Weird connection, about the time the movie came out I needed some gears for a material sander gear box and contacted the manufacturer, if memory is correct it was Durst. Talked to the foundry that was going to make the gears and they told me that they also cast the cannons for the movie. They were functional cannons made to meet or exceed the original types that would have been used on the ship of that era, at least according to the guy I talked to. I know CSB, but I thought it was interesting. |

Awesome move, they should have made more! The story it comes from is such a huge epic that they had to rape and pillage to get something that would fit into anything smaller than a 10 year TV series. I wish to the gods they had decided to go with the TV series in stead. As good as the movie is, the whole story would have been off the hizzle. |

Great movie. You have to watch it with surround sound during the battle scenes Or anytime their underway. The sounds of the rigging creaking and the ships bell in the background adds to the realism, IMO. No shit. I watched it once at anchor in the Chesapeake and a huge summer storm rolled in without me knowing it. Just when they lost the mizzen topmast rounding the Horn we heeled over 20 degrees and it took us about 10 seconds to realize the storm was REAL .

There should have been several sequels- the cast was strong, and the musical score was impressive. One of the best movies ever to see/hear on a good sound system. I wish we'd gotten to see what OBrien did with the Doctor's character come out. He was kind of a nerd in the movie, and while that's straight in the first few books, he's a BAMF. He just doesn't let anyone see it most of the time.
