Of course being in Michigan you probably know about the supposed letter to Henry Ford that's on display at the museum in Dearborn extolling the virtues of the then Ford V8 roadster. 
All folks agree they knew their guns at a time when most bad guys thought of Thompson''s as the ultimate in firepower they stole BAR's from the National Guard Armories .. 
At the end of the day they mostly just were cop killiers and most of their robberies were small time compared to folks like Dillinger etc. but a legendary myth has built up around them..the original "Natural Born Killers." |

My FIL also has a gun that belonged to his distant relative Bob Alcorn. It was supposedly tucked into his holster during the shootout. .38sp revolver IIRC. He keeps it in great shape tucked away in his safe.

An elderly man came and gave a talk to our high school in the late 80's.He knew Bonnie and Clyde before they knew each other. He was once a career criminal and inmate in several prisons. He also knew the birdman of Alcatraz.

Everyone contradicts each other and it's possible, for instance, that Hamer had a Colt Monitor instead of the Remington Model 8, or that some other posse member had something else. I agree that the BAR provided great firepower for the time.
Something I didn't include, but maybe should have, is that one of the Texas Deputies (Hinton) present at the ambush had previously shot at Clyde's car in another failed ambush in Texas. The police had at least one Thompson and a BAR. The .45 ACP rounds didn't penetrate the car enough to cause any injuries, but a single '06 round from a BAR hit both Bonnie and Clyde in the leg. Hinton learned and brought a BAR next time... |
