Just watched CBS world news. Bad enough we have to rely on them for transportation but now we don't have enough motors for future space missions until they can get stuff settled in Russia.

I can see the china foreshadowing on the wall.

Modernized Space Camp Allows Kids To Simulate Frustration Over Lack Of Funding

http://www.theonion.com/articles/modernized-space-camp-allows-kids-to-simulate-frus,36148/

“At Space Camp, each attendee experiences the trials of real-life astronauts who simply are not provided the resources they need to explore outer space,” said director Deborah Barnhart, noting that campers get a firsthand look at what it’s like to pursue cutting-edge astronomical research on a budget that, when adjusted for inflation, is a mere fraction of what it was in the 1960s. “Our campers endure constant setbacks throughout their week here, from engaging in spaceflight training modules that can be shut down at a moment’s notice, to working tirelessly on a solar probe project only to be informed that an across-the-board spending freeze has led to the indefinite suspension of their work.”

“Kids will walk away from a week at Space Camp knowing exactly what it’s like to be an American astronaut,” she added.

This decline we're on is more like going over a cliff.  That article is saddening.

said it would be 5 years down the road before a US manufacturer could take up the slack.

I'm fine with NASA not being in the space race.
Our best bet is to put it in the hands of private industry and let competition drive the research.
As long as the government held a monopoly on our efforts it was overbudget and over managed with a pinch of special interest thrown in.
It was slow growth at best, to stagnant at worse.
Capitalisim and competition have always led the way.

"They" are full of shit, as usual.  If ULA didn't have a monopoly on heavy satellite launches (which is why they are being sued by SpaceX) we could cut the ties to the russkies and be delivering heavy cargo and astronauts in far less than 5 years.

+1

If the "space race" wasn't so heavily driven by military objectives, imagine what could have been done in the 60s.
