Falling asleep is a skill that can be learned.

Have you ever had a job with randomly changing hours or long work hours where your only sleep for days are short breaks?

I have, and I learned how to fall asleep fast wherever, whenever, as needed. Still works today though I haven't done those jobs in ten years.

I do a sort of mental game where I think of a specific situation and try to imagine it as detailed as I can. An example would be an orgy with ten beautiful women that I just happened to be shipwrecked with. I think of every detail: the color of their shirts, the cameltoes they are showing as they tease my member from my pants, how their sweat drips from their nipples as they bend over, how they scream when I tie them to a bamboo rack and punish them with a coconut fiber lash for being naughty, naughty little sluts, etc..

When thoughts like midget clowns who want to hold me hostage for my truck transmission and my mother's ambrosia salad start to intrude, I know that I am on my way to dreamland.

FWIW:
I spent 25 years working nights.
Sleep before the Sunrise does not come easy.
My wife tolerates it, but it still is the suck.

ETA:
NyQuill sometimes makes it possible for me to sleep during normal hours.

My wife won't even let me sleep in the same bed until I shift back over to normal sleep schedule because I toss and turn and keep her up.

7 years on nights and I'm finally on dayshift.

And ... I'm awake.

Might try melatonin. 3mg and a desire to sleep, with no light or sound usually works.  If it's a consistent problem, and it's disrupting your life, talk to your doctor.

I'm serious. Try my method. It works.
