My 83 year old Mother has ALS and I am taking care of her. For right now she can still sleep in a chair all night by herself but she can't get out of the chair. I go home at night and back up early in the morning. I live about 6 blocks away and was wondering what would be the best camera setup to use so I can put a camera in her house and jump on the computer in the middle of the night to see if she is sleeping ok. We have the wrist monitor that calls my phone in an emergency and I'm not away for more than a couple of hours during the day because I give her four tube feedings a day. This is the hardest thing I have had to deal with in my life but I am keeping a happy face on for her. I had to take leave of my job so I can make sure she is taken care of the way she should be and I'm glad I was able to do it. We have a very hard road ahead together but I will be there for her. If I had a camera in there I would be a little more at ease. Thanks

There is a HUGE thread on security cameras around here somewhere.  I think it was started by thegrayman.  Let me see if I can find it.

There is that big CCTV camera thread, but off the cuff if you want something quick and easy, check out Dropcam.

This is going to sound dickish, but I'm going to say it anyway.

I know it's a difficult thing to wrap your mind around, but it just might be time to let Mom go to The Pearly Gates.

Think about it for a minute... would you want to live like that?

OP, I am not judging you because I've been there.  But let me warn you that there is a special kind of misery that comes from not being right at a loved ones' side when things go wrong in the middle of the night.  I understand the need to keep yourself rested because this can be very draining both emotionally and physically.  You need someone in that house with her at night every bit as much as you need a video setup.

Foscam F18910W. Has IR Cut

$60

link

can control it ( move it so you can see the whole room ) and view it from IOS or Android phone using IP Cam Viewer Pro

has a microphone so you can listen to the audio too. If you connect a speaker you can talk through it , but I have not tried that part yet.

Thanks guys. I know the disease is progressive but for now she can still use her walker to go to the bathroom and around the house, she just has a hard time getting herself out of the chair to the walker. She is as sharp as a tack and although she can't talk(hasn't been able to for almost a year, just like the feeding tube), she writes and texts just fine. For the time being the worst thing for her is to have to take a pee at night cause it's so hard to get up. The camera will help for now.

Good luck op.

There are chairs that tip forward to move the person to a standing position.  Family freind has MS and used that type of chair for years, it stood her up right into her walker so she could get around.  Operated by corded remote, and the chair also reclined fully like a lazyboy.

I have a friend who is suffering the same disease.  We have found that putting shower grab bars in rooms and even a rope swing over his bed helps him steady himself enough to continue to be semi-independent.  The biggest problem is the bathroom.  He's down to using a scooter chair to go from room to room but can do a walker for a few feet.  Sounds like he a bit more advanced than your mom.

Another friend, who got it very young, had a German Shepherd that would drag him out of his chair and do all sort of stuff for him.  It would also open the back door for him and hold it so he could escape on his mobility scooter and head down to the local bar.  His dad was all sorts of upset until he realized that the boy just didn't have any quit in him at all.  Him and that crazy dog flying down the road to hang out with his buddies.  It was a sight to behold.  You couldn't help but laugh and smile at his spirit going through what would have made many young men bitter.
