I'm thinking there should be an organization designed around teaching men the things they should have learned growing up. A Man-Scouts as it were. Different courses so you can learn the tasks they should have learned growing up, and either never had the opportunity to, or never really realized existed. Maybe you grew up in New York and never needed to learn to drive. You're 37 now, and figure, well I've never had a car and have always needed to bum rides off family and friends... Where do you go to learn in a safe, friendly, manly environment? Maybe you wanted to learn to fish, but have never gone. You're 62 and want someone to show you, so you can take your grandkids. Maybe you're 27 and can't be bothered to learn basic car maintenance. You can't change your oil, and frankly the concept of a tire rotation, filter check and what not leave you weak in the knees. Say you want to learn simple home repair, or home owner level electrical? Sure you could teach yourself, but at the possible cost of electrocution. Or maybe you want to be able to do your own plumbing work. Maybe some finish carpentry. And we could probably also have one kickass Pinebox derby. |

Men not having a fucking clue is nothing new. There have always been idiots. Hell most of the guys that diy now just make it worse. Most people, men specifically would be better off to accept that they don't have a clue and pay a professional instead of halfassing it themselves.
Don't mock ignorance, it only encourages incompetence. |
|
Yes there are manuals, and dummies guides, and youtube... But are they going to really teach you everything you might need to know? Are you even going to know what you need to know?
As for trial and error... Is that how you want to learn to drive a car? This ain't bumper cars... It might work for cooking (theoretically as long as you don't burn down your house) but working with electricity? "Hmmm... The ceiling is on fire, I'll just pour this water onto the stove to put out the grease fire...." Black water and sewer drains? "I don't think the water is supposed to be coming back up..." Sailing? "Well Clarence, I don't know how to sail, or knots, but by god I got us a boat." "That's just terrific Bill, but the sail just blew away." |

Stop fucking up cars with shoddy maintenance and fucking up houses with hack job home repairs. Just get the checkbook out it will be cheaper and turn out better than what ever you can coble together. |

Maybe you grew up in New York and never needed to learn to drive. You're 37 now, and figure, well I've never had a car and have always needed to bum rides off family and friends... Where do you go to learn in a safe, friendly, manly environment? Driving school? It's not exactly rocket surgery. Maybe you wanted to learn to fish, but have never gone. You're 62 and want someone to show you, so you can take your grandkids. Many DNRs / Parks&Rec have classes. Of course you could ask your buddy if you ever leave the basement. Maybe you're 27 and can't be bothered to learn basic car maintenance. You can't change your oil, and frankly the concept of a tire rotation, filter check and what not leave you weak in the knees. Two choices here - local community college course, or suck start a shotgun because you're so stupid you can't read a Chilton's. Say you want to learn simple home repair, or home owner level electrical? Sure you could teach yourself, but at the possible cost of electrocution. Or maybe you want to be able to do your own plumbing work. Maybe some finish carpentry.
Home Depot offers classes all the time - as to many community colleges, books, you tube videos etc... And we could probably also have one kickass Pinebox derby. Dude if it ain't using an internal combustion engine and having massive HP - then what's the point? Besides your 'man-scout' can't drive, can't fix his car, and doesn't know how to use basic tools - and you expect him to make a functioning soap box derby (or even a Pinewood Derby) car? |

The name of your proposed organizations sounds slightly homo-erotic. Yeah, that's in process... It's apparently a now defunct band out of New York. Maybe the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos?

Do you really want to teach this guy how to use a chainsaw, or change his tire? http://theplazz.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Obamacare-pajama-boy.jpg Honestly? No. But I've seen far too many kids these days who can't change a tire, don't know shit about common manly things that something SHOULD be done. Also we can teach them to properly curse, and to pee standing up while we're at it. Quoted:
Backpage.com I'm not looking for dates. I'm thinking there are those out there who can and would help make BoyChildren in to MEN. And not in the Catholic priest way. Quoted:

It's how we got to we are, no personal responsibility, false sense of accomplishment, et al. Those guys who attempt to do it themselves? Well I can respect that they tried to do it, even if I wouldn't trust my sister-in-law on their cobbled together deck. |

Was coming to post this. |

And Forest, I'd agree... But instead of having to go 37 different places to learn 37 different things, maybe one overarching organization which can do that crash course in each thing and the ManBoys learn the basics. That way if they do want to expand on it they can and at least come to it with right mindset.
Think Boy Scouts, but for Adults. You may not be able to ski a triple black diamond after doing the skiing course, but at least you know which way to be facing, what the poles are for and how to stop. |

Where in the fuck are you going to find competent instructors that are willing to demonstrate how to change the tire on a Prius? And I don't have a damn clue how to BBQ tofu. |

The best thing your proposed organization can do is setup week long survival expeditions for them. None will survive, so we don't need to worry about teaching the other 37 things that matter. |

You may not be able to ski a triple black diamond after doing the skiing course, but at least you know which way to be facing, what the poles are for and how to stop. The $10 'basic 1hour class' at any ski resort will do the same thing. You need to find some better examples that are not covered by commercial sources. How is this supposed to be better than attending paid courses? If you PAY for a course you are far more likely to pay attention and learn what you need. The paid courses have curriculum that have been developed over time to get the clients to where they need to be (no matter if it's skiing, shooting, or driving). Higher skill level course are often available. And best of all - with paid courses you can at least have some say as to when you will attending the course - rather than showing up once a week to learn what the topic of the week/month is going to be. It may be plumbing this month - but you were invited to a skiing weekend with the hot blonde from work - and you don't know how to ski! How will knowing how to use teflon tape on threaded connections help you score? |
| And all you fellows suggesting our loveable rascals in the armed forces as the means of boys becoming men... I want them to know how to change their tires, and navigate with a compass; how to sand and refinish their own kitchen table, not how to get a bowling ball pregnant or how to jack off in a 120degree honey bucket. |

This is the entire reason Youtube exists. If I never learned how to do something, I watch youtube and learn how to do it. Then I research it, and do my homework. Hasn't failed me yet.
Plus, it's totally discreet so you don't have to endure the ridicule of someone asking "You've never patched dry wall before?" |

It is the reason there have always been professionals. I've seen the work idiot home and car owners did in the 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s, and teens. This isn't new, social media just makes it more visible. Admitting you don't have any business fucking with something is more responsible than half passing it because you don't know any better. |

I will step up to the plate. For the low price of $5/hour I will instruct and supervise you in the construction of a chainlink fence. Post hole digging class thrown in free of charge. Hell's bells. I'll teach man skills for free. I'll even throw in refreshments. Come by the house Saturday morning for remedial mowing and weed eating, then tire rotation 101, privacy fence repair fundamentals in the afternoon. But I warn you, I get snappy when I'm sitting on my ass and drinking beer. So, you better bring your A game and be ready to work, err, learn. |

While you have a point with the Pay-Attention, they are already interested and paying attention since they chose to be there. That they want to learn, that is the kind of motivation we're looking for in our fellow Man, right? Earning your Horseback riding merit badge doesn't preclude there being private horse riding lessons, does it? As for Plumbing instruction when you need to know skiing, Well shit, Maybe they should have thought about that before trying to use a skill you have no knowledge of to pick up chicks... As for the Teflon taped NPT connections... Well this one time in Bangkok... |

How about basic life skills classes for those of us who grew up without a Father to teach us? honestly, even when I was little I could have given a shit about most of the girly stuff I was expected to do.
Fixing, working on things, is what I liked and was drawn to, anyway, my point is that so many people, both men and women, grow up without learning much of anything except how to complain and call someone who will overcharge you to fix something, its the reason why so many women end up ruining their cars, they are scared to take it somewhere to be worked on. A basic class, use of tools, common repairs etc basically, all the shit I learned through trial and error. |

All of you guys running down the OP should be ashamed of yourselves.
It's a great idea. Sharing wisdom and teaching people who want to learn leads to people who understand how things work. This makes them confident. Confidence leads to self-sufficiency. Self-sufficient people don't need the .gov to take care of them. This leads to more people who are of a conservative bent. Telling people that they shouldn't fuck with stuff they don't understand is the same as saying, "Go join the FSA, I'll take care of you." Instead you should be saying, "If you don't understand how to do that, let me show you." ETA: However, OP, your proposed name for the group needs some work.
