How long do you think it will before we have permanent check points?
I'm not taking about DUI checks or the ones close to the borders.
I'm talking about at state lines and to enter major cities.

With license plate scanners and soon GPS trackers in vehicles for "mileage taxes" they really won't need them. Maybe.

I think what's more likely is mandated GPS units with tracking capability in new automobiles.

For your safety, of course.

States will enact "charge by the mile" road taxes, and everyone will have to get either a tolltag device or a GPS tracker.

Who needs a checkpoint then?

With tolltags, license plate readers and cell phone tower pings collectable by NSA, pretty much anyone can be positively located pretty much at will.

They're called DUI checkpoints here. I don't have any problem going after drunks, but our local PD has checkpoints every week. DUI arrests/impounds make up less than half of their arrests/impounds. When the majority of the arrests at a DUI checkpoint are not for DUI, it's just a checkpoint.

Sometimes they put up signs saying that there is a drug checkpoint ahead, but there is no checkpoint.

Then they pull over people who do illegal U-turns, etc.

They'll hire whatever they need.  Not like they have to worry about PAYING for them!  That's what taxes are for.
