I just got the news that I will need boxes in the future to get basic channels CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC. They are going to send me 2 boxes that will not cost me for 2 years. After that it will be $6.99 a box. I have several TV's hooked up and cannot get these stations over the airways as I live too far and on the backside of a hill. Is there anyway to get these without paying so much per box?

I don't know if set-top boxes are the same as cable modems in this regard, but you may be able to just buy a set-top box outright that can be programmed to decode what they send you. Fancy ones will have stuff like Netflix and HBO Go built in, if you can connect them to the internet as well.

ETA: Looks like maybe not: Charter Communications
"You can purchase a DVR from a 3rd party retailer, however, setting up and supporting a standalone DVR system from another retailer with your Charter TV in Digital Receiver may be confusing to some users.

If you have problems with your non-Charter DVR, Charter would be unable to assist you. Typically, you would also have two separate pieces of equipment in this situation: your Charter TV in Digital Receiver and your third-party DVR.

Additionally, Digital Receivers acquired from a cable company are specific to that company and only Charter Communication's Digital Receivers would be compatible with Charter service. "
