About what year is the first freezer?
Until then it's mined from the far north and carted as far as they can get it? Maybe cut & stored during the winter? |

About what year is the first freezer? Until then it's mined from the far north and carted as far as they can get it? Maybe cut & stored during the winter? Ice harvesting was a big business around here back before refrigeration. Railroads built ice ponds and ice houses along their lines and had spurs into those facilities for transporting the ice to customers. Major ice users were the railroad owned creameries which gathered and transported whole milk to into NYC. The ice was used to cool the milk cars, as the milk was kept cool at the creameries by storing the milk cans in a pool of spring water inside the creamery building, with the buildings usually built on top of a spring located near the railroad tracks. Ice houses were built as double walled, multi-story structures constructed out of railroad ties with a foot or more of space between walls that was stuffed with sawdust. Being built out of creosote-treated railroad ties, ice houses were very flammable and when they would burn, the ice inside would melt on its outer layers and then refreeze once the fire was out. There are old photos in the local historical society showing mounds of solid ice left after an ice house fire, with the ice lasting through the summer before melting away. |

Cut wherever/whenever it freezes and stored underground in sawdust, at least that's how it was around here. Same here. There was a huge underground warehouse built out of cut stone right by the river. Hadn't been used in years but I remember it clearly. Used to drive by the thing everyday as a kid. Its still there but the county pushed a bunch of dirt and rock up and covered the door. Just looks like a random hill now. |
