I'm in need of a good marine style battery to serve dual purpose with a winch on a car trailer and with the winch on my Jeep.  I'll likely do a dual battery setup for the Jeep, but right now the winch will primarily share time between two trailers.

I came across a deal on an Optima Blue Top D31M battery, specs are 1125 MCA, 900 CCA, and RC of 155.  Its a new battery, never been out of the store, but has a manufacture date of 5/13.  I can get the battery for half price, but the question is, is it worth it?  I can get a similar marine battery (non AGM) for less than $100 that has a current DOM, is the Optima worth basically $40 more?  Also, would you be worried about buying a battery that was almost 1 year old, even if it hasn't been used?

Finally, other than the ability to mount in any position, any other benefit to the Optima?

All Optima batteries are cheap Chinese trash. Get a Diehard Platinum.

Optima USED to be great, they are over priced POS nowadays. They went to mexico I believe and quality went to shit.

Seriously, don't waste your money.

This, I ran Optima in all my rigs for years and watched the quality go to crap.

Die hard platinum for starting batteries...even winch bats. They will deep cycle reliably but don't have the Rc of a true deep cycle lead acid battery.  For your purposes a deep cycle probably isn't the correct bat anyway. High discharge rapid recharge Odyssey..(die hard platinum) is the best out there but not cheap.

yep, my first optima was great,  the next two were rubbish.  I'd sooner buy the walmart battery and replace it every year if needed.

I would have to agree with the above.
My first optima lasted six years in the nevada desert. The next one lasted only two.
I have a die hard now.

Odyssey batteries today are the Optima batteries of several years ago.

This is what you want

GNB Exide Absolyte GX3000

I install these at cell sites for emergency power back up.. it should have enough juice to run your winch

Optima is garbage. Sears DieHard Platinum which is an Odyssey re-badge for way cheaper, for  dual use/winching there's no better battery. Puts the optimas to shame.
