Somebody tell me why a dog eats grass? I know they think it will calm their upset stomach but, the always puke it up later. Maybe they use to induce [puke]? |

I think dogs can puke at will(wolves feeding/weening young do it all the time) so I don't think it is to help them upchuck. I could be wrong. I always let my dogs do it. They never seem to have any side effects so I just ignored it. I had a male Springer that when I'd take him hunting would go bonkers over field mice, moles etc. Ate them right there. He would get so "birdie" over a mouse you'd think he found a dozen ringnecks in one spot! Never got sick from that either. Sorry to hijack the thread. It just got me to missing my buddy! |

Quoted: Somebody tell me why a dog eats grass? I know they think it will calm their upset stomach but, the always puke it up later. Maybe they use to induce [puke]? You answered yourself. Dogs (and cats) eat grass to get something out of their stomach that is not agreeing with them. (Almost everything seems to disagree with cat tummies.) Scott |

Quoted: It could be that the dog is not getting needed vitamins and minerals and this is nature's way of trying to fill the need. I believe there are supplements or changes to the diet that may help. Check w/vet. That is the other thing. When they do not eat enough to puke, it is to get vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients..... Scott |

Quoted: Quoted: Are you sure it's a dog? You'd better cut it open and count the stomachs. Ruminate on that for a while. [:P] A cow has 7(?) stomachs, and eats grass, I get it. Do I win something? Oh, so close! Cows (like other ruminants [hence the pun]) actually have 4 stomachs. So you just barely missed the prize. On the bright side, we won't have to hassle with the Form 4 to get your prize to you. [:)] |

Quoted: Maybe to get the shit taste out of their mouth. j/k There is a bit of truth in this--after they lick their anus and scrotum, they get the taste out by "kissing" their human master--licking you in the face. "Nice doggie!" [}:D] I read that dogs eat grass simply because they like it. They often vomit because it sticks in their throat and gags them. The article says it is not due to the presence of worms (or other parasites) and is also not due to any dietary deficiency. These things are old wives' tales. They just like the taste of it. |
