Why do my dogs freak out when I lay down on the floor? When I lay down on the couch, no prob, they jump up and lay down next to me. When I'm in bed, no prob, they jump up and curl up behind my legs.
But, lay on the floor? They go fucking berserk, barking, running around, licking my face, pawing at my face, jumping over me, jumping ON me, everything but laying with cats. It's like "OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!" "WTF???!!!" "IS HE DEAD?" "SHOULD WE GET HELP?" "SHOULD WE EAT HIM???" "AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!" What's the reasoning behind this? |

Dominance. When you stand or sit, you are clearly the alpha. When you are at their level, you are prey. My dog will only respond to "Come here!" if I squat down. His pea brain then says, "oo! oo! target acquired!!" and he falls into the trap. If you're on the floor, their mushy brains are going wtf? You are now at their level, like any other member of the pack.
Source: Dog Whisperer, Uncle Matty, and originally from a professional trainer whose name I have regrettably forgotten. |
| Like a couple others have mentioned, it's a dominance thing. In the natural order of things, the pack leader occupies the high ground. By putting yourself at their level (or below, in the case of large dogs), you are at best sending very confusing mixed signals. |

Although, she has no dominance issues as she rolls over at my feet waiting for attention. AWESOME dog. |

If not, she's pacing and whining and nudging the person on the ground, or trying to burrow her way underneath them. |

I have a spiral stair case, and my Basset is unable to go down them with her long body and short legs. When ever I go down the stairs though, she rushes over and sticks her nose thru the railing right where my head is level with the floor. She gets all kinds of excited by being eye level with me. I scratch her ears for a bit and then she goes on about her business. |
