So at some point in the coming weeks I will have to get sprayed with mace for training purposes.  I've been tased (voluntarily) a couple times I honestly didn't think it that bad. You lose all motor function but IMO it isn't exactly painful. So how bad is OC spray? What's the best relief afterwards? Just a fan or do all the remedies like milk and what not have some merit?

I think saline helps a bit.

Taser hurts for five seconds. Pepper spray hurts for a lot longer. Copious amounts of cool water and moving air is the only thing that seems to help, and I use help in a very relative sense.

Enjoy!

Getting sprayed with OC or CN?  "Mace" does not mean what you think it means.

What are you being sprayed with. Different stuff takes different methods.
I'm guessing regular OC if so, plenty of water, maybe some dawn dish washing soap and when you shower that night don't wash your hair with you your balls making contact with the run off water or you get the gift that keeps on giving

They had 3 gallon tubs full of cool water with Johnsons baby shampoo when I did it about 20 years ago. Not sure I'd do it again if I had a choice.

It fucking sucks and it's going to fucking suck no matter what decon method you use. I used an entire case of bottled water and it didn't really work on fox labs.

One of my regular customers is a Dr who worked at rikers island for a number of years. He said baby shampoo is the best and mentioned something about prescription steroids to make the eyes water.

It's great stuff, spray it on your steaks just prior to serving.  You'll love it!

I've been OC'd, it sucked but wasn't terrible.  Where it got me worse was the following morning when the OC that soaked into my pores oozed out when I was in the shower and got into my eyes again.  F00kers got me twice with a single spray.

Get jacked up on booze and pain meds, OP, and you won't feel a thing.   Seems to work for criminals.

Honestly, OC can be a show stopper when applied properly and the subject is not hammered on booze and drugs.

Best way to alleviate the effects is exposure to moving air.

OC sucks, no way around it, I would gladly be tased before being hit with OC again.

Like others have said, lots of water to initially rinse as much off as possible.

Stay bent over so it doesn't run down your body. I usually wrap my towel or shirt around my waist as I rinse off.

Once I get home I shower a couple times with dish soap as that really cuts the oil based stuff.  We don't use the alcohol based sprays anymore because of a potential fire hazard.  The foams wipe off easier if you do it right away.

No matter what its going to take time, different people have different reactions.  For me I know it will hurt for a few hours, I've had partners who would feel the affects for 3-4 days and I have one buddy who is immune, lucky him.

depending on what brand, spray or foam, and how it is applied you are looking at 20 to 60 minutes downtime after decon. Running water (hose) beats standing water (bucket). Now is a good time to do it as the air is cool and one can usually find a good breeze. Concentrate on keeping your eyes open as it is the only way to stop the burn. Some of my co workers just stood facing the wind with their fingers holding their eye lids open. Good luck!

It sucks.

I think I got a Wednesday can when it was my turn. The instructor doing the spraying assured me that I was getting a heavy because I was a big dude and it had nothing to do with the
fact my brother was playing for U of A at the time. The instructor was ASU alumni.

In the academy we had a fountain of sorts hooked to a garden hose.

When I got my PSB OC cert, it didn't really bother me at all.

My ex-wife said it's because I'm an insensitive SOB.

Depends on how sensitive you are.

What sucks is that it gets in your pores, hair, skin, clothes, etc. so you'll be enjoying it more than once.

I was sprayed once voluntarily then a second time when an eager EMT couldn't aim the nozzle of his sprayer right and gave me a face full of the crap. You really don't build up a tolerance, but the second time was less irritating.

Try not to breathe in when you're being sprayed.
4/23/2014 2:14:18 PM EDT
[#19]
Bring Dawn dish soap. The soap will cut through the oils and help you get it off of your skin. It'll still take a while to flush out your eyes, but it's easier to do when the water you're using to rinse out your eyes isn't taking OC from your forehead and streaming it down your face.

OC training was probably the most painful 30-40 minutes of my life. When my eyes were finally clear enough to get home I went straight for the dish soap and it took no time at all to get the oils off of my skin that were still there even after having spent 30+ minutes rinsing with water.

Been sprayed 3 times. Each times sucks. OC is the gift that keeps on giving...

When you are done dunk yourself in cold water and use a little baby shampoo to clear the oils off the skin. Move yourself out of the water and into moving air or open air to let it dry out. Water will feel good and you will want to stay in the water, but don't. Wash it off and get out of the water. Milk, cold meat or anything else is bullshit. A little water/shampoo and air work best.

When you are washing the OC off yourself please bend forward. Do Not Stand Up Straight unless you want your nutz on fire...

Remember its getting to be summer; warm air opens the pours and makes you sweat. After being done with oc keep yourself cool and get a shower when you get home. Again REMEMBER do not use hot water or stand up. OC'ed Twigs and berries is a pain you do not want to feel.

This. It will suck as bad as you think it will suck, and it will suck more than you can possibly imagine it sucking, and then it's worse than that. Imagine a billion tiny midgets carving chunks out of your eyeballs with cutting torches. It's worse than that. There's exceptions... but don't count on it.

Somebody else said they'd rather get tasered... I agree wholeheartedly and I've never been tasered.

Water, lots of water. Then soap. Then more water.

And then when you wash your hair in the shower tonite it will burn you all over again. So more soap and water.

It's worse than a taser because it doesn't just go away.  You will continue to be in pain until you get the oil off your skin.  Blink and cry a whole lot, blow boogers and spit like your mom taught you not to and then apply some more water.  Then apply some more water and soap and water.

Have fun.

By the way. Use lots of water.

Edit: water in this context means RUNNING water.  A bucket of water will wind up with a nice little OC oil slick on top that you will repeatedly shove your face into when you are trying to wash off the burning oil.

First you hand your phone or camera to your buddy so he can record it for arfcom.

After you get sprayed don't stop blinking, don't close your eyes, don't rub them, man up and just keep blinking.

Then tear free baby shampoo and water.

If multiple people are getting sprayed be the first one. If they have a bucket to dunk your head in you want to be the first one to use it. My eyes felt like they were glued shut If you have to fight off an attacker do not kick you might loose your ballence. Baby soap works if you get to take a shower afterwards wear shorts the last place you want the residue to drip is on your junk.

Some people it does not affect them that much for others it feels like you put your face in a deep fat fryer.

1) Try to keep your eyes open as much as possible afterwards.  That seemed to help me.

2) Resist the urge to rub your eyes.

3) You're an adult, act like you have some dignity.  No rolling around on the ground, screaming and cursing the day you were born.

Enjoy!

My OC instructor, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, was a black guy named Rudy W.

Rudy was a 35 year police veteran who had worked some of the toughest neighborhoods on the north side, where angels fear to tread.

He told us to watch the group if we had to deploy OC. He said the punks that threw out their chests and said "I ain't afraid of dat" were just punks. You could pretty much dismiss them immediately. They were going to cut and run when the shit hit the fan.

He said to watch the ones who ducked...and be EXTRA careful of the ones that covered their faces like a boxer and rolled to one side or the other like they were avoinding a telepgraphed punch. He said that those were the players who had been "hooked-up" before (hooked up with OC) and they learned in prison when the CERT teams came in to cover their faces and "roll-out" (roll one way or the other to avoid facial frontal contact)

He said the ones that rolled out were the real players and to watch your ass with them and know which way they went as soon as you started deployment.

Practice up with some tabasco at home.  Start eating crazy amounts of it. Smear a little on your lips and face.  If you get brave enough get a little diluted eye cross contamination.  Use lots of fresh rags or paper towels.  Use one get a new one.  I would wipe off secretions only I would not use water or saline until later on.

Tasers aint nothing but a thing unless you got some cruel jackwagon that wants to stand on it till you beg for mercy.  Cause you will if he is on it long enough.

I never understood why people get sprayed intentionally for training.

I don't spray myself with capsaicin, but I have had some ghost and scorpion pepper incidents and what I found to work well was Goop hand cleaner. I figured that if it takes motor oil and grease off it would probably take off capsaicin. Seemed to work pretty well. I'm sure any similar hand cleaner would work well too.

Later, showering with Johnson's baby shampoo helps as it rinses clean away and will not trap any OC in your pores.

It doesn't do a lot to "relieve" the initial pain, but it is the better shower soap for when you do shower.

Since I've shared this before:
I'll share an anecdote:
My company was OC qualified in October of 2007. While at the course, I managed to score a can of inert training spray. A few weeks later, we staged an ambush. It went down on the third floor catwalk of the barracks. I the can. Two buddies were behind the target as he walked towards me and I had another buddy behind me. Keep in mind the target was a bamf that had seen combat and all that. As he got within about 6 feet of me, I presented the can as if to spray him. Before any of us knew what was going on, his brain had already seen the threat, processed it, evaluated the situation, and decided the best course of action. What did he decide to do? Jump off the third fucking floor catwalk. He had a leg over the railing and was fucking going for it before we got a hold of him and pulled him back. The fucked up part? I would've done the same thing.

What's that tell you, op?

4/23/2014 3:32:33 PM EDT
[#46]
Fuck OC spray. I'll get tazed before I get OCd.
4/23/2014 3:35:01 PM EDT

In the academy we had to have our eyes and mouth open so we would get the full effect of the OC. As we were being sprayed an instructor in a red man suit would attack and the goal was to not give up. I tackled him and started choking him out with all my might. They had to peel me off him before I killed him. Over the years I've been OCed a bunch of times. In my opinion OC is more psychological than physical. Just ignore it and get into the fight. Don't be a pussy.

Now, Taser is different in affecting the neuromuscular system.
