Biofuels produced from waste products left from harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline in terms of carbon emissions, according to a $500,000 study paid for by the federal government and published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The study said biofuels made with corn residue release seven percent more greenhouse gases than traditional gasoline...

...The study contradicts the Obama administration's narrative that biofuels are a much cleaner alternative, while also receiving more than a billion dollars in federal support...

Earth Day's already happened? I spent so long letting the shower warm up while I was on the toilet that I forgot to light my tire fire.

It was going to be an awesome cookout that day. Spotted owl & baby harp seal kabobs, slowly smoked with California Redwood. When the sun went down, we were going to make a circle of V8 powered vehicles. They would idle so the batteries wouldn't run down, and the headlights would be our illumination.

The difference is BTU's.

If you look at the volume of CO2 based on volume of fuel burned, ethanol is "cleaner". If you look at it based on recoverable BTU's, gas is "cleaner".

However, there's also an open/closed loop debate.  With biofuels, you're re-releasing carbon caputured recently by the plants from the atmosphere.  With gasoline, you're re-releasing carbon captured ~140 million years ago.  If you think in very long periods of time, both are closed loop. If you're looking to maintain the atmospheric CO2 levels of a short period - say a couple thousand years - then oil CO2 is a net increase and thus open loop.

The point here is that CO2 from fossil fuels and CO2 from biofuels have different long term effects on atmospheric concentration.  In theory, we could actually reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration if we used only biofuels (unless we achieved perfect combustion, in which case atmospheric levels would hold steady).
