Looking at buying a moisin from the gun show that comes In town every 3 months. There's always a guy with a big ol box of surplus moisins. Now I'm guessing they are all good to shoot, but there's a bunch of "gunk" on the bolt. I know it can't be bad stuff but just out of curiosity what is it?

| I think you are talking about cosmoline which is a rust preventive. It is actually a good thing in that it keeps the gun free of rust. Now the down side is you have to clean it up when you want to use the damn thing. It's not that hard but takes a bit of time and you will need to break down the gun. There are a ton of videos on youtube on how to clean the cosmoline out properly. |

Shop.....but, don't buy the counter bored ones. Plenty of good examples without the counter bore. Around here they are about $189 w/o a sale. IMHO, get the hex receiver if they are the same price as the rounded receiver version. Just, for the cool factor.
Check the web sight for a comprehensive look....... http://7.62x54r.net/ Aloha, Mark |

What the hell is a "moisin"? ![]() It's one of them thar rooskie rifles I've heard about. They all suck, the ammo sucks and not a single one of them has ever shot better than minute of barn. Waste of money and time to get one. Damnit people start believing that so I can pick them up for cheap again. |

The receiver date is under the upper tang - you have to remove the stock to see it. However - w/ 2 round receivers and a cutting torch, you have the makings of an Obrez... |

How about a "Fugly?" The guy I sold my "counter bore" to was gonna do it. But, I was just too afraid to go that route. My hacksaw skills are in question. Aloha, Mark |
