Interviewing with a pretty selective manufacturing company a bit later this morning. Would be a nice step up in pay and training if it comes to fruition. Lots of upside.

Killing about an hour in a coffee shop beforehand to try to relax. I wonder if caffeine is a mistake, since I can get kind of high strung as it is. Any tips or hints to improve or entertain me? Let's hear 'em.

Eta: offer letter received. Looks like it went well. Thanks, Arfcom.

Not sure I could score any this early in the day. I could double shot the espresso and rub some powder sugar under my nose.

Why do you want to work in this industry?
Why do you want to work for this company?
What is your greatest weakness?

It is a large company, not sure how broad their product lines are, want to avoid specifics at the moment just in case. It would be machining, about a 75% raise from where I'm at, but it's NOT a union shop. I'm finishing up my degree, and apparently they take one or two people from the top of the class each year. Kinda nervous, kinda jazzed.

Good food for thought, I'll make sure I have answers for those filed and ready.

Have you googled "standard interview questions"?

You should have an answer ready to go for them.

Stuff like:

Describe a time you resolved a conflict with a co-worker.

What do you see your weaknesses as?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Why do you want to work for this company?  (For this, you damn well better be familiar with their business.)

Many more.

That one's great.  Had a guest lecturer tell us that he answered that by saying that he wants to run his own company some day.  At the end of the interview, the interviewer said that they would love to hire him but cant since he'd leave in a few years.
The guy ended up running several companies anyways.
I always say that growth opportunities within the company are my biggest deciding factor for a job, so hopefully I'll have x persons job or similar when they move up.

Yeah, that is a sort of tricky question. My field is full of people who have been doing the same thing for 20 years, and I am sure the higher ups view that as a positive, to have all that experience and skill. Not sure how much of my ambition I'd want to peek through.

Any advice I would offer is now too late.
Relax.
Be yourself.
Eye contact.
Firm handshake.

It's really the same process, present your best attributes, wear a suit, be 15 minutes early and try not to have sweaty palms. And, of course, have a safe word.

Nope, but by God I was ready! Seemed more like conversations than interview. No trap questions, no hypotheticals. Now I'm just dwelling/stressing on the uncertainty and waiting. He said he would be in touch "very soon". Not sure if that means tomorrow, or within a couple weeks.

Walk in with no expectations.  Most places you interview have a stack of people lined up for that job.  If you are qualified, it's more like do they like you in the first 5 minutes or not.  Not how much more qualified you are then the next guy.  I had a phone interview 2 weeks ago.  Answered every single question, then he started asking me what should we do with this and that.  I gave him a lot of good info.  Said he had a pile of resumes to go through in the next 2 weeks.  By now he's forgot who I am.  I just keep pluggin along.  At least I'm working while I'm looking.  Just relax.
