Gulf of Mexico red season has been shortened by the Feds to 11 days but only for recreational fishermen.

How many here does this effect and what are your thoughts?

It affects me because its hard to take off time for work specifically to be allowed to keep and eat a fish that I am only allowed to keep during an 11 day period out of 365.  I'm not sure how decimated the population of them is here but they are caught a lot even off the beach at times.

The population is 180 degrees opposite of "decimated". It's ridiculous how many ARS there are.

Roy Crabtree is damn near as bad as Eric holder.  These asshole do their catch surveys using teenage kids with clipboards on the docks in the afternoons.  All the guys coming off the charter boats are too drunk to remember what they caught.  The private boats break into two categories:  "fuck you, none of your business", and the braggadocio types who caught and released a million fish but they were too small.

No matter what you tell (or don't tell) these idiots they will skew the data in their favor.

Add the commercial fishing lobby whose recent accomplishments include LOWERING the minimum size of fish they can keep and this is the result.

NMFS can take their fucking season and shove it right up their fucking ass backwards.

I only wish our governor had the stones of Louisiana's.

This decision could very well put many of the charter boats out of business once and for all.

The commercial outfits paid enough money to fuck over the individual once again more than likely.  Rather than go after the relatively small haul of individuals, why not go after the hundreds of commercial boats from all over the world that ass fuck fisheries with near impunity because seaman snuffy is out checking small boats.

I fish a ton, but rarely for Snapper, but it's all the same BS.

Our Government (on all levels) has become a lot like Murphy's law.

If they can fuck it up, they will.

Look at the bright side:  there will be a massive hiring drive for waterborne JBTs to enforce this crucially important regulation.

"Well that escalated quickly."

I big issue is also the Feds trying to reduce how far out the state waters go.

Louisiana bucks federal fish managers, opens year-long red snapper season | NOLA.com
After the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council approved a committee recommendation Thursday to drop the recreational red snapper season to 11 days, the state of Louisiana retaliated by extending the season in its waters.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced licensed anglers may harvest red snapper in state waters any day of the week until the end of the year or until Secretary Robert Barham closes the fishery. Before Thursday's action, the season had been open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
...snip...

Barham said the change influenced his decision.

"The Gulf Council's action is clear evidence that their process is broken and they give no consideration to the needs of individual states," he said. "For two years, I have been trying to persuade the Gulf Council to move forward with regional management, allowing the states flexibility in management by empowering our anglers and fishing industry to decide how they want red snapper managed. That hasn't happened."

Where exactly anglers can fish during Louisiana's red-snapper season is a matter of dispute. The state claims waters out to three marine leagues, or 10.357 miles, the same distance the federal government recognizes to be state waters for Texas and the west coast of Florida.

However, off the Louisiana coast, the federal government says state waters extend only three miles out. Normally, federal waters are patrolled by state fisheries agents, but those agents have not been issuing citations for anglers harvesting red snapper within the three-marine-league zone.

I asked if they knew every one blows smoke up their ass and they say that they do but it doesn't matter.

Its utter bullshit.  There are loads of them out there.  Commercial gets to catch freaking guppy sized ones, and we (rec fishing) get 11 days out of 365.  More Fed bullshit.

More red snapper are killed as juveniles by shrimpers than are caught by commercial and recreational fishing combined. No harm has been done to the population by recreational fishing in most areas. Some close in structures are over fished but always have been, a little further out and good numbers and good size is readily available.

I took my dad and a few friends out last October from Gulf Shores, AL during the bonus season and we caught 16-22 pounders all day.

It affects me in several ways. First the season is in early June while the wind is still bad in the gulf. This means the actual number of fishing days is probably 5. The commercial snapper industry has bought the NMF and gets what it wants.
All this changes my vacation plans around offshore fishing

It looks like the commercial fisherman were upset about the recreational limit being over caught.
Court rules Gulf red snapper management illegal, lack of accountability in recreational sector cited as harmful to all | AL.com
The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on March 27 ruled that the federal government violated the law by failing to properly manage the red snapper fishery in the Gulf of Mexico.

The decision affirms all commercial fishermen claims in a June 2013 lawsuit that federal regulators illegally allowed recreational fishermen to exceed their share of the Gulf of Mexico's combined red snapper quota in six of the past seven years without holding the sector accountable.

A group of 21 commercial fishermen from all Gulf Coast states filed the lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Commerce and its representatives from NOAA Fisheries, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Coastal Conservation Association as a defendant intervenor.

The court ruled in their favor last week, just ahead of a meeting at which members of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery management Council were expected to vote on new red snapper allocations.

Dr. Bob Shipp, one of Alabama's three representatives on the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and chairman of its Reef Fish Committee, said during red snapper meetings in Washington last week he heard rumblings and rumors that the red snapper quota could be set so low that the 2014 recreational season length, now set at 40 days, could be reduced to between six to 14 days.

"Some people are even saying there may not be a season at all," Shipp said early Monday morning as he prepared to attend the first day of the Gulf Council's April meeting in Baton Rouge. "If Florida goes non-compliant, they could catch the whole recreational quota in their state waters. We really won't know for sure what's going to happen until we hear what the National Marine Fisheries Service is going to do."

MDMR plans red snapper meeting
BILOXI, Miss. -- State marine officials are meeting next week on new rules for a shorten red snapper season but frustration is already growing among Mississippi fishermen.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources meeting is Tuesday in Biloxi. Officials are seeking input on the management of red snapper and data collection methods. The meeting is also open to discussion on the recent decision by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council to reduce the length of the season.

Recreational and charter boat fishermen enjoyed more than 40 days of red snapper fishing in 2013 and were anticipating a similar season this year.

Commercial fishermen won a lawsuit claiming the recreational side isn't accountable enough with its red snapper catch.

The result? An 11-day season for 2014. Officials said the shorter season is needed to ensure the future of red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico.

The frustration is building among Mississippi recreational fishermen. Louisiana fishermen are also upset.

I can't believe more folks aren't pissed off about this.

How about the NMFS punishing Texas for having a state season by cutting the seasons for the rest of the gulf states a few years back. Crabtree and his lackeys are crooks of the worst kind.

Action: State waters open May 24

Information: Recreational red snapper harvest will open May 24 in Gulf of Mexico state waters (from shore to 9 nautical miles). The season will remain open through July 14, closing July 15.

FWC just emailed this out. Looks like they are going by their own rules. State waters go 9 miles into the gulf. It doesn't really get deep enough for decent size red snapper though. We usually have to go 40-60 miles.
