The antis want nobody except government employees to have any type of firearm.

They would love to implement it by incremental steps, one of which would be to require psychological screening with no legal recourse for people who get denied the "privilege" of owning a firearm.

There is no serious push underway to get that done, but it is an important reason to continue judging candidates for all offices at all levels based on their views of the Second Amendment.

Even the few that admit it really mean they want only the police and military to have firearms.  Not even the most extreme actually want to disarm government.

I'm not really sure how that would work exactly.

I mean somebody who is taking an anti-depressant (like paxil) for anxiety is not the same as someone who is taking it for severe depression.

Same drug used for different issues - unless I'm missing something?

Even being diagnosed with severe depression is very different than being adjudicated as mentally incompetent by a court of law.

Considering some of the stupid bans that have passed, like shoulder things that go up, I'm actually surprised no states have something about mental health yet.

That's one of e scariest things about bills like the aca to me, so many pages to hide the foundation for that kind of ban.

I've heard doctors are asking about guns in the home, I haven't been asked though.

Currently, you have to have been either involuntarily committed, or have been adjudicated mentally incompetent (or something that that effect).

Any changes to that would require changes to the law.

Now, MAYBE they can try to claim that court-ordered mental treatment might be the same as "involuntarily committed" - because beds are very limited in mental health institutions - but anything other than that, would require a change to the law, meaning that it has to go through Congress.

Exactly.  SSRI drugs commonly used to treat depression are also used to help people quiet smoking, IIRC.

So laws based on medication are simply not going to get passed, because of those grey areas.

Now, absolutely, a law could be passed that might say that anyone who has ever been diagnosed with serious mental illness would be prohibited from owning firearms, or who is currently under treatment for severe depression, etc - but again, anything like that would REQUIRE an act of both houses of Congress.

From what I understand it doesn't make it easier when applying for a pistol permit in NY. I think certain drugs are automatic disqualifications while some require a doctor to say you are good to go.

I'd imagine the antis would be looking at NY's gun legislation as an example to follow.

Given Our Fine Young President's penchant for ruling by decree Executive Order, and the similar inclination to bypass Congress by issuing regulations which can be done with limited public input, I wonder.........

Neither the state nor anybody else other than your doctor, your insurance company, and your pharmacist have ANY business knowing what medications you have been prescribed, or why, without your authorization.

That is not to say that there is a danger of government finding ways to do end-runs around the law, but it is the law.

If you are adjudicated as mentally incompetent or committed involuntarily, that becomes a record of the court system.  States vary on disclosure rules.

If shooting yourself in the head kills you 99% of the time - Is that sufficient enough to ban guns because they're too dangerous? Maybe we should find safer alternatives for crazy people to kill themselves or others.

Hard to say...I know of a lot of cardiac patients who are prescribed diazepam, lorazepam,  or alprazolam only because their body won't tolerate "beta blockers", usually because of arrhythmias or edemas.

They don't need "antidepressants for their head", per se. They just need something to keep their overall heart rate from becoming elevated unnecessarily.

Methinks you're trying to categorize people by their prescriptions, which seems to be a common phenomena in this forum.

The other day, my buddy was telling me that Idaho had passed a law that basically said anyone who had ever taken any kind of psychotropic medication wouldn't be able to buy a gun. I called bullshit and he said it was in the news. I checked around and found this article. Link

So this one gun store owner made this statement to the newspaper. I have no idea where the fuck he got this info. From what I can tell all Idaho is doing is agreeing  to turn over records of people that have been involuntarily committed to an institution to the feds for the background check process. People who are already legally barred from purchasing a gun. It's this kind of shit that causes panics.

Well, line F on a 4473 asks the question about being adjudicated mentally defective or committed.  But ultimately its because its not about making people safer, it never has been.  Its been about the disarmament of the populous slowly over time, one bit at a time.

One of these days you're realize that we don't like you because you are a troll. The fact that you are gay really isn't the issue here.

BTW - You can't say the F word here anymore.

Just like the line where it asks if you have committed a crime of domestic violence because they're slowly making us woman beaters...

I read it. Don't care about your worries, if you were that worried youd buy one and actually support 2A.

All you do is troll GD. Nothing stalkerish about it when new troll threads of yours pop up in active topics several time a day

Don't ASSume. I haven't bought one because I'm staying with family and its not allowed. When I buy a house it will be my rules. This was a simple thread with a simple question. The only people trolling in it are the likes of you.

Has there been or is there any real push to bar people from owning firearms for mental health treatment?

What, you afraid they will take your guns away?
Oh yeah, thats right. You don't own any as you yourself have said. Fuckin trolls....

Some of y'all are borderline stalkers...
Read the thread, I was worried I might not be allowed to purchase any.

Like THIS one? Or any of these:

And I'm sure it would put a tingle up your backside to imagine me doing the dirty with my hand.

As Undefined said, we hate you because you're a troll, your sexual orientation has nothing to do with it.

ETA: when did I say ANYTHING about the blue portion of your post? You have a victimization issue or something?

You don't know what the word troll means.

Challenge for you, if you really think I'm a troll, then don't respond to me. If you're right and you ignore me, then you win and I lose.

Or keep fapping and gushing at every chance you get to talk about me and reply to my posts. I really don't care either way.
