I'm guessing i can use this somehow to verify that the files were transferred without error. Can anyone tell me how?

If the midi files came in an archive, such as in a ZIP file, the unzip process would notify you of CRC errors.

I used to own a Roland GRS500, which was one of the first guitar synthesizers ever built. Bought it in 1980. It came with its own guitar, built by Ibanez, which was modeled after the Les Paul. I was such a POS I finally traded it in for a Guild acoustic guitar. Live and learn.

But I know the new stuff is much better. Maybe I need to revisit that stuff? Hmm...

You need a checksum application.  There should be several you can get for free of the internet.  One of the more widely used type is an MD5 checksum app.
