[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Owl thread (Page 1 of 3)

Found this little guy in an area park today. Saw whet owl, not much bigger than my fist. Extremely tolerant of us being there, and was sitting so low in the tree I had to just about lay down on the ground under his perch to get these shots, and was barely over minimum focusing distance for my lens. I actually could have caught him, but I imagine it would be about like sticking my hand into a blender.

Never seen one in the wild before, and only seen one in a zoo. Figured I'd post it here since owl threads are usually well received. |

Funny, but these guys don't hoot. The name comes from the fact that some people think their call sounds like a saw. They do look a good bit like a miniature barred owl though. Quoted:

who? Funny, but these guys don't hoot. The name comes from the fact that some people think their call sounds like a saw. They do look a good bit like a miniature barred owl though. BS on that. I've heard plenty of hooters in my backyard. sofaking annoying. |
| I"m not too fond of owls. In 2004 I was riding in NW AR and collided with a Great Horned Owl. I spent 2 wks in ICU in coma, another 6 wks in hospital, dozens of surgeries and 5 months later I was able to go back to work. 3 more surgeries since then, related to original crash. I still have aches and pains from that today. |

I've heard plenty of hooters in my backyard. sofaking annoying. You've actually heard saw whet owls hoot? Interesting. Barred owls definitely do hoot though. Had a pair wake me up every day for a week last summer. I was almost willing to risk substantial fines for the sake of my sanity but left them alone. ETA-after looking it up I see they do have a hoot like call. Looks like the book I read was wrong. |

Owls are the Chuck Norris of the bird species. If you have never seen one snatch a rodent in the wild you havent lived. Also, don't wear fur on your head in a treestand ftr. A couple years ago while deer hunting I had good reason to be thankful I had followed that advice. Barred owl landed 3-4 feet above my head and just looked at me. Couldn't shake the idea that it wanted to know if it could eat me. |

At a clients house they have a couple of owl houses in the trees. One of them actually has an owl in it! He sticks his/her head out once in a while during the day to check things out. First time in my life I've ever seen a bird in a man made bird house. Its pretty cool. |

A bunch of cats attacked a small owl of some kind in our yard when I was a kid. We had it for a week before it kicked the bucket. It was alert and friendly most of the time we had it. It did buzz saw down big hand delivered grasshoppers. Then again, I've been dive-bombed by horned owls a few times, they are assholes. |

My left elbow was poking thru my skin. Busted up left shoulder and scapula. Busted all ribs on left side, front and rear. Punctured left lung. Ruptured spleen, I almost bled out on ambulance ride to hospital. Two surgeries in Russellville, AR, then the doc's told my wife that they couldn't do anything else and put me on LifeFlight to Little Rock, where I started my ICU stay. I live in a semi-rural area, and it's not uncommon to hear owls hooting to each other. I don't hate 'em, but when they hoot, it gives me the creeps, and I've been a hunter and in the woods all my life. |

RikWriter - Those are some great photos. Can you tell us what is going on in this pic? It looks like that owl is about to get nailed by a hawk. http://m6.i.pbase.com/o6/29/580229/1/142802506.OFNAtq4T.BarredOwlBeingBuzzedbyaCrow.jpg It's a crow trying to scare away a barred owl. Crows dislike owls and I think the crows had a nest around. |
