Is there any advantage on a home defense or CCW gun or even a range toy i.e. not a race gun?
They lighten the slide fow what benefit and help cool the barrel...? |

| Ever look in the butt plug of a glock and notice how much lint there is? Also, it's gonna be real fun when the flames shooting out of the ports blind you at night or worse yet burn you if you have to take a shot at contact distances. Never mind, saw you are talking about lightening cuts or whatever the fuck they are called. Cool I guess but I'm not so sure I would do it if you plan on putting the gun through a lot of rounds. |

With modern ammo...Winchester Ranger for example the flash is damn near non existent. I dont have that gun anymore or I'd do a video. Jerry Miculek did a video on this recently IIRC. Quoted:

Even if their is almost no flash all that shit that shoots out of the ports is not gonna feel good on your face in the aforementioned situation. |

I am no expert but removing metal out of a moving part like the slide would seem to decrease the life span of said part. I can see why it is done on race guns but for my every day carry guns, no. |

It lightens the slide to help with recoil. You have less mass being thrown to the backwards and forwards in your hands and consequently the gun has (can be tuned wth loads and springs) less recoil. |

I always thought that one generally ports the barrel. The slide uncovers the ports when recoiling from firing. No. Go look at ported pistols and ported pistol videos. Starting out with the ports covered would trap most of the gases being expelled and send them out the end of the barrel like a normal gun, negating any reason to have porting. |

Your average shooter is not going to put the 70-100+ thousand rounds of hot loaded ammo it would take to crack the slide on any good modern firearm. I put north of 60k through my old STI Open gun in 38 Super. Some of my loads for that gun ran 1,500-1,600 fps with a 115 grain bullet. The extra dirt and gunk intrusion isn't worth it though. |

The top has to be open for the gun to go in and come out of it. No to mention the opening at the muzzle on most holsters. Gravity, dirt, dust, lint, bodily decay and gun oil all work together in a wonderful symphony to gunk up your gun. I take it you've never carried a gun and don't shoot much. |

Dust, lint and grime are still going to make their way inside your holster and gun. That big hole that your gun fits in doesn't seal itself when you put a pistol in it. The pistol itself has easy entry points for crud exposed outside of the holster. You're also going to have daily grime collecting in the bottom of that holster. |

Barrel cooling isn't an issue.
