I want to buy a couple so my sons and I can learn how to throw them. Where do I start? Cheap is nice...
Also, is the technique pretty intuitive, or should I watch some videos or something? Thanks |

Just found these guys, any experience with them?
http://www.beaverbill.com/main/throwing-hawks/ http://tomahawkguys.com I was thinking that the "mouse" would be good for my 7yo. |

I agree that they are cool- Got one for Christmas and I dig it, but I'll be damned if I can't get that thing to stick when I throw it at anything. I'm a tomahawk throwing failure. Quoted:

Many moons ago my dad taught a young fresh faced Chico how to throw 'hawks. "Step six paces off from your target and when you throw it let the handle slide out of your hand instead of just letting go". End of lesson, first one stuck. if six steps don't work try 7. |

The sog ones are pretty inexpensive and cool You need a slab of cottonwood to practice with. Wet it before you start. The 'hawk throwing shown in movies is bogus as hell, BTW. |

I have a beaver bill thin, lightweight throwing hawk as well as one of his English pipe hawks. He makes very good stuff..........
Oct of 1983, I had just won the Junior Hawk and Knife Comp at the 10th Annual local rendevous. The prize that year was a Sid Birt Damascus tomahawk. This was in the middle of the Damascus revival, and Sid was in the forefront of that. I was offed 1K on the spot for the hawk and turned it down. Still have that hawk today, and the local club just had their 41st Annual rendevous. I came in second in Hawk and Knife, Im slipping....... |

Look at the Cold Steel line. ( the pipehawk is my favorite)
Then go here. |

That was serious cash back then, weren't you tempted just a bit? |

Where would I go about getting a cottonwood slab? We are kinda short on old-growth woods around here. Got plenty of mesquite and yaupon though.... |

Im on a horrible connection, but I will upload some pics later of my backyard target. Its a "Round", abuot 6 inches thick from a tree. I constructed a tripod stand using some 2X4's and 5 carraige bolts, nuts and washers. You want to be sticking across the grain. If you use a board as your target backstop it will split out pretty darn quick. I thow at playing cards as the actual target. That is pretty much the "Industry Standard" when it comes to Hawk and knife throwing comps in the blackpowder/rendevous circut, including the National Championships put on my the NMLRA at Friendship IN.
And yes I was tempted to sell the hawk, but my Dad was right there and told the guy to get stuffed cause we had not even taken that pic yet..... |

Dunno about Texas, but they grow near water, and are considered to be trash trees by nearly everyone. If you have a group of 'hawk throwers in your area (competititions are held in most states, and have groups), they will routinely have slabs available, often free. |
