The dohicky that tells it to defrost is broken, and the coils are all iced up.
The dohicky sits above, and is wired into the heat coil that defrosts the fins. If you look at the back of the freezer, you'll see that it is iced up and bulged out where the vents are, toward the bottom.

The dohicky that turns the coil on (not the thermostat) is designed to fail. Water gets into it during the thaw cycle and breaks it.

Empty it out and look in the back for the block of ice on the coils.

Google your GE model number.

Mine did that.  It was the defrost board.  From what I saw, very common.  Fix was several hundred dollars, and usually lasted 8 months.

Boards are made in , you guessed it, CHINA!

See if your model has that problem.

Mine was fixed with a $2 part and a $50 service call.

dohickeys have motors or circuit boards and are generally not near water (ice)
