[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 2 hour delay....Really????? (Page 1 of 2)

| I just noticed my local school system is delaying schools by 2 hours because of the cold tomorrow. If the low is going to be 12 and the high 23 what damn difference does a couple hours make temperature wise. Are school kids nowadays that wimpy? I remember either walking or riding my bike the 4 blocks to elementary school when the weather was in the low teens. |

And just a few years before you were excited you got to sleep in before school. the universe delivers |

That way the sun can come up more and you can see the car that you will be sliding into better? No snow, no ice, no rain. so no sliding around here Same here. All it does is make me late for work. |
Back home they closed school...I was ranting on the phone to my dad about it, when I said it allowed it hit me. "Anyone with a shred of common sense wouldn't send their kids out without a winter coat, pants, gloves, and a winter hat". "Anyone with a shred of common sense" excludes 3/4 of society.

On the upside it means less school buses clogging up the works at commuting time in the morning. For the record I had to walk to school in the blinding snow chased by velociraptors. Uphill (both ways) of course. Darn kids. I know! Me too. My kids don't know what a dangerous trek to school really is. |
|
In rural areas it can make a difference. I had to walk 1/4 to the school buss stop. The thing is in many areas of the country, little kids don't have appropriate cold weather clothing for temps below zero. Would you want to buy your kids high quality winter cloths every damn year for temps that they may never see?
This really isn't for middle school kids, but 6 and 7 year olds. |

My kids school doesn't even bat an eye at those temps. Quoted:

The forecast here is 7* at 8am and 14* at 10am. Personally I can't tell much difference when it gets below 15*. |

It has to be REALLY fucking cold here for them to cancel or delay school. I remember it happening twice since I started kindergarten in 1980. If you live within a mile of school here, you have to walk. I imagine that's why they close. Can't have six year old kids walking a mile to school when the wind chill is -40F.
I'm fairly certain schools here in Upstate NY will be open tomorrow, even with air temps in the -10F range, and wind chills in the -30F range. |

Would you want your six year old standing at the bus stop for an hour with 25mph winds and a wind chill factor of below zero (after their parents have already gone to work) because their bus wouldn't start? |

You must be in Charlotte. When my employees started telling me their kids' schools were delayed, I was like WTF? Do they think children will freeze at bus stops? Quoted:

This is my first winter in NC after 55 years of MN winters. My granddaughter came home with that note today and I laughed my ass off. It seems like summer here. She went to school today in shorts and T-shirt. Parts of the state that almost never get snow don't handle it very well. Just about any snow on the ground will get school canceled here. Although I can see why they don't want young children at bus stops alone when its going to be 5 degrees, probably wearing insufficient clothing and there is a chance of the bus not starting. |

Same here.
PITA because we were scheduled to get delivery of some furniture we ordered before Christmas, and of course the delivery time now coincides with the kids' delayed school opening, so we had to reschedule the delivery. FML, we were first on the truck tomorrow, now we're looking at a Friday delivery. Patience, as I am often reminded, is a virtue. |
