My reading led me to discover that Ron Zacapa 23 is not in fact 23 years old, being blended of rums that are as young as 6 years.  And worse, the bottle is empty.  What kind of Rum should get its slot in the bar?  I like dark amber full flavor and smooth body. If it has tits, so much the better.  The Saturday night Rum thread, begins here.
Go.

Eta, I appreciate rum old enough that ........no.  Not gonna make that joke.  You'll hafta imagine it.

My bar has... 5 6 rums in it right now.

I regularly stock a light rum (Bacardi Superior), a spiced rum (Sailor Jerry/Capt.), a coconut/bitch rum (Malibu), and a dark rum (Kraken).

The "top shelfs" I have are Appleton Estate 21, and this:

Zaya is my go to rum. I could drink it all day right out of the bottle. Very smooth. Beats the pants off the Appleton's, actually.

Rum is OK, I'm not enough of a booze snob to know different though. Vodka is where it's at. You can mix it with anything.

However, Whiskey is something I seriously enjoy all by itself.

But now this thread has me thinking rum drenched thoughts....... Hmmmm........

It's very reasonably priced. I buy it for $36/750ml in NY, and our taxes suck.

I woke up in a bathtub at a girl's house ( still had my kidneys! ) after starting a bottle of that.

For the most part, but there are several drinks that use a mix of light and dark/spiced rum to maintain the rum taste without overpowering with the vanilla/spice flavors.

You can't make a mojito with dark rum.

*proper. I know you can make a dark rum mojito, but it defeats the purpose of the drink, IMO.

Ok....I'm not a drinker.  Good  Beer (although the 'go to' is Yuengling Lager, I still like most good imports, and US Microbrews) are my drink of choice...but I want to keep a reasonably well stocked bar.

I piggyback on drink threads (Scotch, Burbon, Tequila, etc.) to get ideas for what to pick up when I see it on sale...just to have around.

So...for Rums, what's a good quality, not excessively expensive ($20 to $40ish) brand/type to stock in a bar....since I'm not a connoisseur...spending $100 more to get 'just a touch more smoothness' isn't want I want...just something that someone who knows rums, comes to visit and sees it in the bar can say 'that's not too bad at all' when they try it....

I take it from the discussion...Light Rum (mixing), good Dark rum (sipping) and spiced Rum are good to have...so which of each?

(I've had the Bacardi stuff before and use their 151 when I need alcohol to burn off easily when cooking...and a long, long time back someone on here suggested Goslings Black Seal as a favorite of the ladies...and had some Capt. Morgan and diet coke once...so that's the limit of my Rum experience.)

For sipping, spring for the Zaya.

Have some Goslings black seal for mixing with coke or ginger beer.

I don't really know where the sweet spot is for light rum.  Bacardi is the standard.

I have had to go back to drinking plain old white Bacardi Rum with Diet Pepsi. If I would drink Sailor Jerry or Kraken I would get so fubared shitfaced drunk that I would be unable to function for 2-3 days. You havent had a hangover until you have had a Sailor Jerry hangover. I cant drink margaritas anymore for the same reason. Tequila makes me drink faster.

My 2 favorite rums for sipping neat are:

Dos Maderas 5x5. Double cask aged, Spanish rum. Smooth, with hints of vanilla, and pecans.
It is my absolute favorite rum.

A close second is:

Thomas Tew. Distilled in Newport, RI. Smooth, lightly sweet, and a little smoky. Hard to get, but worth it.

Both are under $50/bottle.
