Mine was running a little hot as well, so I put a few ventilation holes in the cover to help with cooling

You really need to cool that sucker down!
It's supposed to be running cooler than that. My 1.67ghz becomes unstable above 116 deg F, and yours is much hotter than that. I highly recommend that until you get more cooling fans drilled/cut into your casing, or until you buy a new Specialized casing designed to keep temps lower, you are decreasing the life of your pc, and also making your computer unstable. |

try upgrading to a better CPU fan (not necsarily more expensive. ive got a $12 on mine)
i run 45c(115f)degrees when webbing. thats with my fan selector on med. when gaming i kick the selector to high and the temp rises to 50c(122f). high acctuly overpowers the fan running it faster than normal. i may start using low and shutting off the case fans and let the 2fanned PSU deal with the idle heat when in standby which should be quite little as the cards will be mostly off, the harddrives will be off. and the harddrives are heat monsters in these systems now. they run better and longer if you have a fan cool them. heat can/will kill them faster. however i have to wire in my switchs for lights and the front/rear fan sets before i can start using standby. XP 2000+ 4 system fans, 2 front 2 rear, 1 front is cooling my harddrives as well. my CPU fan/heatsing was sold by Galaxy, i think it came from wiredzone.com, 80mm fan for cooling, lets it run slower/quieter for the same cooling effectiveness as a faster noiser 60mm Red Cold Cathod in the top, a blue in the bottom. |

Atarian--
You gotta replace that astock AMD heatsink/fan combo with a decent set. You don't have to spend more than $25 to get a decent replacement. It would also help if you added another quality intake fan. You'd be surprised how much of a differnce this would make. and all for under $40. |

I just replaced my CPU fan from the stock one to a volcano 7. I was running @ 140F now I am running @ 114F. Change your CPU fan and get some good thermal compound. I used Arctic Silver 3.
Just worry if you get upto the 140F range. Mine was cooooookin! |

I have a AMD XP 2000 running in a lian li pc case with 6 80mm ventilation fans. I also have a Vantec Aeroflow heatsink with solid copper core. My CPU runs around 104 degrees F.

I have a Boxed AMD 2100+ overclocked to 2200+ with fsb running 278mhz.Right now it's running at 116 degrees.
I have a standard 350watt case. |

my rig is in a Thermaltake Xaser2 A5000A case $127(hey i like its looks). the only nonthermaltake fan in the case is the CPU fan. the window fan isnt powered yet. dont need it right now. the PSU is the Thermaltake Silent Purepower 420watt unit, $75

I'm not sure... will have to shut down and reboot to see what it's running at...
It's an ABS computer w/ a AMD XP chip 1.4ghz Just check.... With SETI running for some time and browing... it is at 131 F That's w/ an intake and exhaust fan and w/ a CPU chip fan (was replaced, warranty job). |

I have an AMD 2000+
384 DDR a bunch of other bs 2 fans and that's it. I don't know how to tell how hot it is. I be slightly computer illiterate. |

wow, thanks for all the info folks. methinks i'll try a new fan. as i recall, between the fan and the cpu there was a piece of what looked like double sided tape. hope that comes off easily...
schapman43 that case is nice! i wanted one of those aluminum puppies but spent the $$$ on 8mm mauser ammo instead. also, looks like you have a fan on your mobo (???) right above the chipset heatsink. wtf is that??? many thanks to all. |

Man, my dual 1800's top out at 95F when oc'ed and running folding/seti... Course, I watercool them.
For most AMD systems, anything under 50C (122F) shouldn't be a problem, actually pretty likely they'll be fine even a bit hotter. But 50C is where I draw the line and like to get better cooling happening. As a general rule of thumb, if you're having lockups/crashes frequently, but the problems don't happen when you cool the system off a lot... you should consider more cooling. If you remove the side of your case, and notice problems go away... you most likely need better case ventilation (intake and exhaust fans). If you still have problems w/ case side off... try blowing a full sized floor fan into the open case... if that solves your problems, probably want to upgrade CPU and/or Case cooling. |

I have the same chip you have and it's currently running at 93F. There have been some good suggestions here; you probably need in this order; 1) Better Heat Sink to Chip contact. This is probably killing you. Go to [url]http://www.arcticsilver.com[/url] for instructions on putting thermal paste on. Even if you use knock of thermal paste, follow their directions. I dropped my CPU 10 degrees C just by following these. 2) Better heatsink fan, like someone else said, you don't need to spend above 25 bucks but that'll get you a good aftermarket fan. A volcano would be nice but pricey That will probably fix you up, also make sure you have decent air flow in your case and your cables are not bunched up too bad. A handful of zip ties will do wonders. Also check to make SURE your Power Supply fan is running, I've seen these fans quit and the PS still runs and the heat build up is bad. If none of these work, careful application of Tannerite will cool it right down..... Crash |

My power supply actually caught fire! somthing wrong with the pc board caused a resistor to overheat and actually burn through the board. Had to replace the harddrive and the motherboard
