It is way past time to replace my 10 year old desktop computer.  We mainly use it for surfing the net and storing photos and music on it (no gaming) which is why this Pentium 2 boat anchor has lasted me this long.  I was planning on just picking up a refurb or off-lease desktop running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.  My wife thinks that we should go ahead and get Windows 8 since we don't upgrade often and we have a tablet and smart phones (similar to 8).  I can see her logic, but I am also used to Windows 7 Pro from work.  Any opinions on which to go with?  I know that Windows 8 was despised when it came out, but didn't know if this has changed over time.

Also, does this look like a good deal for $265?   Refurbed HP Pavillion P7, AMD A8-3200 (2.5Ghz quad), 4GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, Windows 8 64-bit

Thanks for the help.  I am not a techie- jut got a smart phone two weeks ago...

That's not a bad deal. I'd look into how much RAM it will accept before you pull the trigger. More is better.

HP has stellar customer service, but I'd get they're extended warranty.

Classic Shell is free and will make Win8 look like Win 7.

For what you use it for that is plenty good enough. The memory is a little on the small size for running win8, but if you truly are doing nothing but surfing or mail it will be ok. Heck for what you are paying, even if it dies after a few years, you still got your monies worth.

Thanks.  It is from Newegg's refurb program so it isn't sold as under the HP brand; I'm guessing the warranty is through a third part refurb company and not HP.  Still worth it?

There is a Tigerdirect store local to me which would make returns easier if necessary.  They have a lot of refurbs and off-lease desktops, but nothing matching the specs posted for the price.  Mostly dual cores which would still be light years better than what I currently have.
