Quoted: how much are they? Quoted: Quoted: One day if I ever hit the lottery... how much are they? More than I can afford as a toy. One of my friends had a Volvo Unimog typish thing, think he got $20,000 for it Quoted: Quoted: One day if I ever hit the lottery... Needs to be your son's first vehicle I wish |

This is what I think of. The units that had them in my division also had A/C... we'd trade cigarettes for time in the cab. |

Are these things readily available here? Price range? I haven't looked in the last few years, but there were a few dealers that could be found on the internet. One of the heavy truck companies was also working out a deal to import new Unimogs for the US market. Pinzgauers are probably much easier to afford (unless prices have done something weird), but don't have the capabilities that a Unimog does. A Unimog, a Pinzgauer, or an M35 would be fun to own (and I could actually get some practical use out of any of them), but they don't fit my current budget. |
| I've wanted one ever since I went on an offroad trek with a group of Jeep guys many years ago. One guy had an old Unimog. It was the first time I'd ever seen or even heard of the Unimog. It crawled over everything, up and down very steep hills with ease. It is a truly remarkable machine. |

Seems like upkeep would be a big problem....parts, knowledgeable mechanic etc. they use the common Benz diesel engine - which outside of the US is the backbone of most medium - heavy trucks. not sure of parts here in the US read on upkeep and parts |

If you armored that and put on the robot armed bush hog tool, it would be absolutely perfect for cleaning up the Zombie Apocalypse. |

Seems like upkeep would be a big problem....parts, knowledgeable mechanic etc. It is. I used to work on them, and Pinzgauers. Brush up on your German or French if you intend to own one, and spring for a good long distance service since you'll eventually be calling overseas for parts. |

Would be an awesome river running truck all chained up. With a winch to snake logs off the river bank/islands. Looks neat, but the mess you have to deal with after wading like that is incredible. Seen brake drums packed full of silt, and gearboxes full of tan sludge. |
| Unimog Doka and Volvo Sugga are dream vehicles of mine. Was looking into an expedition vehicle for back country trips and was ready to drop the hammer on a Doka but with its top speed and the reality that you spend more time on road than off killed it. A lot of vehicles can be bought or built with better speed, road manners and amenities that you will actually use 90% of the time with only a small trade off in offroad capability that could be rendered moot with planning and skilled driving. All the driving skill in the world won't get the Mog to do interstate speeds comfortably. |

In the early 90's, I owned a '77 416 DoKa. 5.7L V8 diesel. 8sp tranny. 3way hydraulic tip bed (you could dump loads to the left, right or back). When it was running, it was awesome. When it wasn't (which was fairly often), it wasn't. When parts would break, they tended to do so in a dramatic fashion.
I sold it in '94 and never looked back. Fun toy, but not practical to own back then. Now I suppose it would be a bit easier to obtain parts with internet forums/retailers, but I still have no desire to own another. Cool looking though. I'll have to see if I can dig out some old photos to scan. |
