[ARCHIVED THREAD] - The Bah, Humbug Thread (Page 1 of 2)

The year my last son left home I drug the entire tree - complete with lights and decorations - outside and threw it in the trash. I tolerated Christmas cheer thereafter but made no effort to perpetuate it myself. After dad died in 2010 I've barely been able to tolerate Christmas, let alone participate in it.
This isn't due to anti-religious leanings - even though I am most assuredly agnostic - it is due to the fact that Christmas brings nothing but commercialism, crowds, traffic, and painful memories. So to this I say: Bah, fucking humbug!!! |
| I agree OP. I'm not religious, Christmas time seems to bring out a lot of bad in people, and it seems like all people give a fuck about is what they're getting for Christmas, and it also seems that self-proclaimed Christians are the worst about that. I don't mind the amazing deals on gun-related stuff though. |

Those two rules fit my ideology perfectly! That makes three of us. |

I have been very Scrooge-like in the past. I've gotten to a better place in my life. The joy is there, under the hoopla, and it still shines as if it were new. It just took a while for me to remember where it was. Good luck to you, OP. I wish you joy and happiness on your journey. |

Need a Snickers? ![]() Where do you live, I will send you a pound of some of the worlds best coffee to bring back your spirits. I enjoy the holidays because of family (all of my family and in laws for the most part are functioning adults who just enjoy being around people). When I was working non stop, traveling, etc, I used it as a day to reflect on my life and reorient on where I needed to go to be what I wanted to be. YMMV. |

Quoted: I enjoy the food is about it. I don't enjoy the food at all. It's desperation food, just like thanksgiving. A feast for the near starving... There's no way I'm walking by a fresh slab of Ahi to grab a freaking Turkey, after all both exist in the same store! I'm not against the feast, let's just upgrade the menu, shall we? |

I don't mind the amazing deals on gun-related stuff though. Celebrating the birth of Jesus doesn't bring out bad in anyone. Focussing on what if Timmy needs a PlayStation or an Xbox does. With that said I hate what Christmas has become. |

Fuck all ya'll and Christmas-----I'm finalizing my divorce tomorrow It will be a good thing, in the long run. But, right now, I have ZERO Christmas spirit in me. You'll live, and be a wiser person for it. Many of us have been through the same and yes, it can suck (although in my case I was glad to be rid of the snatch after 16 years of bs). If that's all that is affecting your Christmas spirit then I hope you get it back soon! NotAFudd: I'm in Utah. |

Lol thanks, I think. You look very Grinchy in your avatar, should I add you to the newsletter list? |

Dad died less than 2 months ago.
Money has been tight as hell and I thought I was going to be able to go out and buy a few Christmas gifts this weekend when I got paid. Not gonna happen now. My truck started pissing gas on the ground yesterday like crazy, looks like one of the gas lines rotted out. The truck is parked and just waiting for its turn in the mechanics shop. There went my Christmas money. At least I will be able to spend some time with loved ones which is important. I miss my Dad......bad. |

Yes, holiday-connected deaths and losses here too. Two years ago I had someone committed to a psychiatric hospital on Pearl Harbor Day. That was, uh, interesting. I do enjoy listening to and performing real Christmas music, e.g. Handel's Messiah or the J.S. Bach Christmas Oratorio. I'm not religious as I was in my youth, but I still find the music inspiring and uplifting. I'll make an allowance for Silent Night, which is as far as I am concerned the only Christmas carol that matters. |

| I know I'll get flamed for this, but this thread is a perfect example of what happens when you take the Christ out of Christmas. Here's hoping that anyone feeling down or disgruntled about the Christmas season can find a way to take a deep breath, realize what it is that is actually supposed to be celebrated this time of year, and find some happiness and joy in their lives. I'll be praying for you all! |

Okay, as one who will spend an hour in the Hallmark store reading Maxine cards just for the humor, I had to take you up on that. Quoted:

If they want lights on the roof or a blow up Santa in the front yard then that's what I'm doing. Thankfully they don't see the appeal in any of that.

I'll be praying for you all! Even as an Agnostic I agree with this. It's easy to become jaded and cynical over the commercialism. I love Lucy's line in A Charlie Brown Christmas - "It's run by a big eastern syndicate." I try to get to a concert of SERIOUS Christmas music, or an Easter service, every year. |
| Not my favorite time of the year for several reasons. The main reason is the commercialism along with the pressure from ads to spend x amount on gifts, I've hated that for years and it keeps getting worse. I only buy things for my grandkids and a few nieces and nephews. Another reason is I live alone and get depressed thinking about all the bad things that have happened in my life this time of year; lost my mother a few years ago the day before Thanksgiving and her birthday was on Christmas Eve, my wife left me right after Christmas 5 years ago, my daughter died right after Christmas 6 years ago (leading cause for the break-up). Last few years I've become a workaholic and a grump, even worse this time of year. Bah humbug! |
