I commute a little over an hour to work.  This AM about five miles away from the office I get a "battery not charging" message and a battery idiot light on the dash (99 Cadillac POS with 150k on the odometer). I changed the alternator & battery 2 years ago.

I have 100 miles of AAA towing coverage, should I get this thing out of the parking garage and towed from here (DC) or see how far I can limp it toward home?

I'm leaning toward the drive toward home and hope for the best, but don't want to break down in rush hour.

I would run to a Auto Parts store and have them check it.  They can tell you if it is the battery or alternator fast and free.

in car testing isn't very accurate at the auto parts store

pull the parts and they can accurately test them though

I've got it down to where I can swap an alternator under 30 min if I have the tools out already........

there was a whole lotta practice about 6 months ago until I figured out a wire was rotted through (same thing - not charging, alternator was actually fine though)

check your wires as well

Unfortunately the north star alt is buried under the intake I think.  This may be the last strike for the Caddy.  I bought it for 5k a few years ago and it only had 50k on the odo.  100,000 miles later and way too much is going wrong. I guess it has paid for itself, but I have had many more reliable commuters.

Mine (4.0 ranger) is under the intake but not too bad - I can just pull the intake out of the way to get to it

I have one wire that tells the truck to charge the battery - it runs through the engine block and was rotted out just as it comes out of the block, way down.... I cut it off and re-ran a wire across the top, tied out of they way...

it may be that easy
