Made my decision. Some of this was helpful, some of it was insulting. It was all eye opening. But I really don't need any more advice on the topic.
Mods, Nuke this from orbit please. |

SNIP This box is built from reclaimed wood I pulled off a barn in Perry County. The structure was well over 100 years old. It was built at a time when things had to last and everything was paid for in blood, sweat, and tears. You can go to a saw mill today and get red oak lumber, but it will not be like this. The wood is not as dense, the grain not as tight. It doesn’t have the mineral marks and slight imperfections that make it unique. It does not have a history. Simply put it is not as beautiful. Oh if this wood could talk! Would it speak of standing in a vast dense forest in the 1800s? Would it tell us about lying in a pile at the saw mill, wondering what would become of it? Maybe of the day that someone picked it to be a part of a great and important structure? How about the laughing children and tired men it sheltered from the cold rain at the end of a hard day? The fear when someone came and tore it down? The uncertainty as it lay once again in a pile waiting for its next purpose? The joy of the day it was once again picked from the pile? Or would it proudly and happily say that it has finally been turned into something beautiful? I hope like this wood, that you can say you are happy. For you are as beautiful and unique as this wood. You are never far from my thoughts and prayers. Merry Christmas! So what says ARFCOM? Fixed the note for you |

Erm, because you're a creepy stalker and lovingly created a rosewood ladder from which you can climb the nearest tree and use your Leica binoculars to spy on her. Quoted:

So what's her social security number? How would I know? ![]() Un, no. |

I have a couple of very close female friends that I'm sure would love for me to give them something like that and would not read anymore into than our friendship. We've literally been close friends our whole lives, never dated, and never will, but love one another very much.
I say go for it if she really is a close friend and won't get a creep vibe. |

So what's her social security number? How would I know? ![]() Un, no. As much as you might be feeling right now that GD doesn't understand the kind of friendship you have with this girl, unless she's your wife or long-term SO, that's not an appropriate message. (And even then it might be a bit much) Good rule of thumb is that female friends don't get messages or gifts that you wouldn't give your male friends. Period. If you can't say that you'd do EXACTLY the same for a good male friend, then you've got other motives for giving her the gift. Be honest with yourself, would you LIKE to be more than friends with this girl? |

First of all, I AM NOT asking for relationship advice. Second of all I should probably know better than to post this in GD but what the hell.
I do a lot of wood working. A couple weeks ago I was jacking around in the shop and came across a couple pieces of reclaimed barn wood I had planed and put back for a special project that I never started. I build panels and display cases for a local taxidermist. I supply wood items for several local flower shops. I decided that since it was close to Christmas I would build something nice and try to sell them through the flower shops for extra cash. I decided to build jewelry boxes. Ended up having enough of the reclaimed oak to build 4, I had 1 that turned out extremely nice and decided to keep it to give to a friend. Here is where it gets interesting. She is not my girl friend, we never dated. We are just friends. I wanted to write her a note to go along with the box. So this is what I wrote, a buddy of mine was in the shop today and saw the note laying on my work bench. He read it and started laughing. Told me that it was "deep" especially if you read between the lines, and that I was crazy. This box is built from reclaimed wood I pulled off a barn in Perry County. The structure was well over 100 years old. It was built at a time when things had to last and everything was paid for in blood, sweat, and tears. Or would it proudly and happily say that it has finally been turned into something beautiful? I hope you like this box made from old barn wood, for you are as beautiful and unique as the wood used for this box. You are never far from my thoughts and prayers. Merry Christmas! So what says ARFCOM? The second paragraph should be struck out. Completely. It's sappy as hell and way over the top, and it distracts from the purpose of the note. Focus on the beauty of the wood and the box. |

Here's the question. Would you like to be more than friends? If so that note may do the trick. Successfully winning a woman's Heart and mind are lost art forms now a days. Seems like most men just do it with money, jokes or alcohol. Truly speaking to her heart or mind or both can really take you some where.
If you have no intentions of being more trash the note and rewrite with less feeling. |

Quoted: I hope like this wood, that you can say you are happy. For you are as beautiful and unique as this wood. I say that the paragraph is awesome, and often how I think of things when restoring/refinishing. Some people see it like we do, but I don't think many. Coats upon coats of slathered on paint remind me of this, every time. It really makes me happy to bring back something that was so ugly and dilapidated, that it was surely headed to the dump in any other hands. A number of things I've saved actually were on their way, waiting curbside. Now as for that closer I've highlighted above... that's a bit iffy, and probably the only thing I'd think hard about. But you know her, and your relationship, and how you communicate... and if you feel good with it, then run with it. To me the letter seems fine, and I would think that she'd keep it with the box always. |
