After my first deer hunting trip in 2006 I developed a sinus infection.  First one ever.  Since then I've had more than I can count.  They usually last from late fall until early spring and come back after rounds of antibiotics and steroids. I've hand pneumonia 4 times since then and bronchitis at least once a year.  I finally have decent insurance and saved up enough to get it fixed.  I had a catscan 3 weeks ago and my septum is crooked and my sinuses are all clogged.  I also have terrible sleep apnea and require a CPAP machine running 9cm of pressure.

In a few weeks I'm going in for two procedures.  The first is endoscopic sinus surgery and the other is a septoplasty. The first opens up my sinus holes, cleans them out and allows them to drain. The next takes care of my septum that is crooked (genetic).  They remove a part of it and place plastic pieces up there for a week or so. Doesn't sound like fun.

Currently I am almost fully blocked one one side of my nose from breathing at any given moment.  The other side is barely enough to breathe without using my mouth.  My sense of taste has nearly gone away and I have pressure in my right ear that feels like a constant ear infection.  It's miserable.

Has anyone had surgery on your sinuses? If so, how did it go?

UPDATE Went in this morning and my blood pressure was through the roof.  170/130.  Would not go under 150/120.  I've had great blood pressure up until the last 6 months or so and it's been climbing.  Surgeon put me on an Rx of Metoprol 25mg to control it.  Will have to postpone this until after the end of the year.  I was really looking forward to having it done and getting on with the world and feeling better.  I've had anxiety attacks in the past and every time I'm in a hospital my BP rises 20-30 points.

It sucked balls!  Sorry. Hate to be the guy that tells u so but it sucks ass. It feels like you got hit in the face with a ball bat when you wake up from surgery. The good news is I can breathe much better now though. Had it done almost 20 years ago and am still gtg. I would do it over again.

Good luck.

I was expecting this to be a Subnet thread

Sorry. I have nothing real to add to this

Same procedure as you, no problems at all. You won't regret it.

I had the septoplasty.

I almost woke up during the surgery.  I came out enough that I was aware the surgeon was banging on my nose as if he was driving 10-penny nails.  I was bout to open my eyes and I think my vital signs changed enough to get the anesthesiologist's attention and he put me back under before I actually became awake.

The stuff they pack in your nose after the surgery leaches into your bloodstream and makes every tooth in your head feel like they are going to explode.

The packing stays in for four or five days before it dissolves.

That being said, I can breathe better and my sense of smell is better.

My surgery was in 1996, so it may have changed since then.

My experience was the complete opposite.  My sinuses got all fucked up in the durkstan and had surgery to open them up (something had collapsed and was acting as a one way valve... could breathe in but not out of one side, other side was similar but not as bad) and clean em out.

Doctor made it out to be pretty bad afterward (recovery wise). I woke up from surgery, took the most refreshing, easiest breathe of air I could ever remember taking.  Then I went home, popped a Percocet, took a nap, and woke up feeling 100%.  No pain, little bleeding, and an overall feeling of relief.

Took a plane ride two days later and had 15 days of con leave.  Hah, suckers.

I had it three years ago, along with a tonsillectomy, and adenoid removal.  I couldn't tell any pain from the sinus surgery, the tonsils and adenoids hurt so bad.  My ENT doesn't believe in packing the cavities though, I had a nice little gauze pad that ran under my nose and hooked over my ears.

I thought this was going to be Subnet, as well!

I call sinus surgery being roto-rootered.

Had a "up3" done 2/07. (Uvalectomy, tonsilectomy, rhinoplasty) for osa.

The nose part hurt the worst.

Afterward, You'll be glad you had it done.

I had a deviated septum too, and had surgery to fix it.  Post-op was the most miserable experience I've had in my entire life.  You can't breathe through your nose for a while (a week I think) after, and I felt like I was going to suffocate at any moment.  Swelling was awful, couple black eyes, pain meds didn't touch the pain.

I can breathe great now though, so...glad I did it.

Yeah, it really sucks for a few days!! After I had it done I found that irrigating my sinuses with a saline soloution really helped. It cleared out some tremendous clots and really helped open my nose. My Dr put silicone rubber tubes up my nose to keep it open. Oh yeah one other thing. My tongue started to swell so bad that I had to get a steroid. It got so bad I could hardly swallow at all. That was scary!! ( Turns out they grab your tongue with a clamp and pull it out of the way, hence the swelling. NICE!!!)

my sister had septum surgery to fix damage from an accident.
it hurt, but it was worth it as far as she was concerned.

I've had septoplasty 3 times and my septum has grown back all 3 times after about a year. The recovery is so miserable I don't think I'll ever do it again. These sinus threads pop up often and seems the success rate is about 50/50.

Had the same diagnosis and surgery back in 2009. Expect about a week of misery followed by about a month of "no one better come near my nose" to life is good again. Seriously the first week sucks, but it was well worth the outcome.

Follow your Docs advise to the letter.

This.

I had a septoplasty and tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy at the same time.  Wasn't that painful at all.  No problems.  Really happy I did it.

The most painful part of the entire thing was going back to get the splints taken out of my nose.  Holy FUCK that hurt.  Take some pain meds before you go to help numb you up.

Had the surgery a couple years ago now after fighting infections for about a year with no luck.

After surgery, the recovery kinda sucked.  Very sore nose for a couple weeks, then it was just sensitive for a couple months.  Packing and plastic splints in my nose sucked for a couple days then it was taken out.

I felt like I could breath much better after they took the packing and splints out...but then after a few days/weeks it seemed that it wasn't as clear as it was right after the packing came out (although it was better than before the surgery).  Went back to the Dr. and he checked my sinuses with this LONG ass scope.  He said it was extremely clear and that the passages were wide open.  He gave me a nasal spray and said that some people have to stay on the spray for years afterwards depending on their situation (local climate, dust/debris etc...) to keep the passages more open.

Glad I had the surgery but wish my sinuses felt more open.  Interestingly enough, when I go back to areas with drier climates for at least a few days, my sinuses are much much better and feel more open.  I think it has to do with the wetter climate that I now live in.  Didn't start getting sinus infections until I moved up here.  Bummer....

Well, seems like I have another infection starting up. That's what I get for sitting in a blind for a day looking for deer.

I have always had sinus problems since I can remember, but when I was 20 my nose was broken and was not set right it got a lot worse. I had surgery almost two years ago, my nose rebroke and set right and my sinus opened up a bit. It helped, but I have gotten two bad infections since then. I use my neti pot twice a day to flush out my head and that helps me.

I was pretty apprehensive about mine (dec 26 2012). Mine went smooth as silk. The techniques have improved a lot.
The worst experience I had was the prednisone + narcotic+ fenergren psychotic episode I had that freaked out my family.
Drug cocktails are scary, never had 'illegal' drugs make me feel that way.

Good luck, you'll be fine. Go easy on the steroids.
