When checking your oil level on the dipstick with a car/mower/ etc..  Do you fully seat the dipstick by screwing it all the way in, or insert until you hit the top of the threads then pull it out to check oil level? The 2 different methods produce very different level marks, obviously.  I want to get this settled once and for all because i am always unsure now whenever i check oil.

I always fully seat the dipstick, but some people and even manuals say not to.   Whats the hive say?

You're supposed to check the oil?

To the threads unless you work in a gas station then you pinch the top of  the stick and sell an extra quart.

Both answers are correct.

In most  engines with the screw type dipstick you are supposed to put it back in the hole, but not engage the threads to check.

In engines with a slide in dipstick you push it all the way in to check.

to be correct you should check the owners manual.

Just make sure the dipstick is dry. If there's oil on it, you've got too much in there.

My lawn mower is 8 years old, never checked the oil.

Push/pull sticks are easy.  Threaded ones can be pain, so you just stick it in without screwing it back in, and add teh length of teh threads.

Theads? No car I have ever owned has a threaded dipstick tube. My lawnmower does, I believe the manual states to just stick it in, not turn when checking. My cars I fully seat on the gasket or crimp etc. I just wish the reading part was easier to read...
