I have several hunting rifles but I don't have anything that I consider a true deep woods brush gun.

Several years ago Ruger came out with a "Compact Magnum" spin off of the M77 Hawkeye. While the RCM chamberings didn't really take off (probably because they tried to do something that has already been done by the WSM chamberings) Ruger had enough sense to introduce the same rifle in .308.

So what we have here is a bolt action, controlled round feed, 20" barrel, carbine chambered in .308. The fact that it has a nice walnut stock is icing on the cake.

I sort of want this thing but not sure how much I'm willing to pay. Leupold scope sweetens the deal but its still a used rifle.

I just bought a Ruger GSR last week for brush hunting and I love it!

For what you want I would look into the savage hog hunter in .308. It has a 20" threaded barrel ( easily suppressed) synthetic stock and iron sights it's also drilled and tapped for a scope and has adjustable trigger for around $515 I had one in .223 and it shot amazing for the price.

Not really a Savage fan, I've had problems with push feed bolt guns in the past.

What sort of problems? I've owned several Rem 700's and never had a problem with any of them feeding or extracting.

Older version of the Remington Model 7 in .308 is my favorite woods/brush gun. I have the SS synthetic version with a Leupold 2.5-8x36 Vari X III scope. Weighs in just over 7 pounds fully loaded with scope, sling and mounts.

Blown in ejectors in a Savage .22-250 & .25-06 both with Hornady factory ammo. Savage fixed the guns and Hornady replaced with ammo but the fact still stands that this wouldn't have happened with a Mauser type action.

Sort of left a sour taste in my mouth towards push feed guns and Hornady Superformance.

YMMV

I have a M77 All weather ultra light in 30-06. Barrel is 20inches and more pencilly than the peniliest ar barrel ever. Very light and handy, works great and puts the first shot dead nuts perfect every time.
