Its a very versatile platform, and for someone that could only afford one cheap long gun, they are hard to beat(can get a decent shotgun for $150). But they do have their limitations, and certainly are out performed by the AR platform in most self defense scenarios.
For people that have, or can afford other options, a shotgun is out matched. Personally right now my go to for home defense is a pistol. I have toddler aged twins, and a 6 y/o that are my number one priority, and having a free hand is absolutely necessary. Everyone must make a choice that fits them best. |

No?. Use a real gun. Buck shot and slugs can be pretty nasty even if they hit solid bones. I love me some shotguns. |
