Ready?

Here we go. Can I store my generator (Generac XG8000E) year round, outdoors, covered in a shed without any ill effects?

NY State climate, cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Shed completely encloses the unit with good room for air circulation. Furthermore, the shed itself is under a raised deck and receives no rain/snow etc.

Thoughts?

Store only or run it from there also?

Yes, you can.

Right now I'm talking about storage only. Ultimately I will be building this which will both store and enclose the generator when it is running. Working many hours during hurricane Sandy taught me that keeping your generator as quiet as possible is key.

The shed in the video is what I'm using BTW.

As long as you don't let the fuel get degraded there should be no problem.

My General 10,00XL "lived" in a concrete "shed" for years.

I ran it til the carb was empty of fuel and kept it on

a trickle charger... I live in an area with four seasons, but winter is not as

cold as New York.

Tagged...Good question...I'm going to be picking up a generator soon too.....

BUT...I remember seeing a video of someone using that type of shed for it & it melting.

Close it up good. Mice like to settle in for the winter in a nice cozy spot somewhere inside the generator.

While there they like to pee on electronics and work on the wiring as a snack.

You mean ill effects other than having it stolen?

Yes.

Run StaBil thru the fuel, then shut off the fuel and run the carb dry. Then get some sort of rodent control.

This is a 3/4" galvanized steel eyebolt. Size 11 Merrell for scale. It passes through 12 inches of reinforced, poured concrete foundation wall and is secured by a nut/washer on the other side. The generator is chained and cabled to this eyebolt. The chain/cable passes through the generator frame in several places. The generator's wheels are about to be removed and replaced with square wood blocks so even if they get through the chain and cable they're gonna have to lift it, unless they bring wheels with them. My property is surrounded by fencing...

That being said, you're correct to point it out, and I am always looking to improve security.

Fuel degradation would be my only concern.

Maybe rodent infestation, had plenty crawl all up in things and eat the wires.

You sound like you have security down, so I'd go for it.  That's really the only concern.

Should be GTG.

If you're really worried about rodents chewing up the wiring and hoses, you could put a box of mothballs in an old sock, tie a knot in the end of it, and stick it in between the gas tank and engine before you put your cover over the unit.

Where are you located?

Keep fuel stabilizer in it at the minimum.

NY State. Fuel is stabilized and rotated out regularly.
