A buddy of mine is wiping down his new 700 SPS and noticing rust on his cloth.

It's a pretty dry climate in the Columbia Basin.

I just told him to keep it wiped down with Rem oil.

Is parkerized less durable than bluing?

Any suggestions?

You need to oil parkerized surfaces. The finish traps the oil.

Wipe oil on and then wipe it off.  If he is storing it in the basement, tell him to take it upstairs.

The standard SPS finish is not a parkerized finish.
It's Remingtons cheap ass finish that is prone to "RemRust".
A true parkerized finish holds oil and resists rust much better than that abortion of a finish that Remington has gone to.

I can't recommed RIG Grease enough. It's a great surface protectant and it sticks around - much better for medium/long term storage than less viscous gun oils. I learned about it years ago in a shop I used to manage. We kept the sheepskin "RIG-Rags" on all the counters for wiping down guns after customers handled them.

I have been using it personally for over 15 years for everything from daily shooters to long term storage collectibles and it's outstanding - never been dissapointed and it works wonders on parkerized finishes.

May be worth a look:

Ah yeah.  The 870 Express bead-blasted and blued watch it rust in front of you finish.

I recommend a tactically patterned Cerakote.
