I have been using Chrome almost exclusively for the last couple years. I'm a demanding user, but I can't help but thing that things could be better.

I tend to have 20-30 tabs open at any given time, approximately half of which are threads here. My physical memory usage seems to always be between 60-80% (I have 6GB), and when I look at the process list in the Task Manager filtered by memory usage almost all of the top results are Chrome with two lines for Spotify hidden in there. Of course, as that usage goes up, everything starts to get really slow.

I could try to use it less, or I could probably upgrade my RAM so there's more to use, but I'm having other challenges, too.

The first is that sometimes, it seems to "stall" when loading web pages. I can click on a link or refresh a page, and it will get stuck in a loading state, but if I click the link again, it loads immediately.

The second is that there has been a recent change in the browsing behavior that inconveniences the hell out of me. If I click the quote link on a post, my browser will refresh to that post unless I navigate to another page and return. If I click on the reply link at the bottom of a thread, the browser will refresh to the bottom of the page regardless of how many new posts there are.

I know there are behavioral and hardware solutions, but I really feel like this is a software problem. Suggestions?

Each enabled extension creates an instance of Chrome as well.

I have noticed the "stall" that you mentioned, it is annoying.

Chrome has a built-in task manager.  Use it to see what tabs are eating up your memory.

Do remember that each tab of Chrome is a new instance of Chrome.

Also: OneTab

30 tabs open at once?  That's a lot of German goo girls.

How quickly can you alternate between tabs using that system?

yeah--with research, 30-40 tabs is about par for the course.  plus PDFs, onenote, and excel.  my mac handles it fine, but my office machine bogs down like crazy.  am trying to talk the department into a new machine, but that's a pipedream.

is there anything out there that's better than chrome?

IMHO, chrome blows.

Firefox has the niftiest gadgets, but IMHO Opera is the best for everyday browsing. Never had a single issue of memory leakage or freezing.

Recently switched to Firefox after a long hiatus. Holy crap, it's much better. You can install most extensions without having to close and reopen, which I couldn't do with chrome for some reason. Also, you can create new private tabs without having to create a private window. The Firefox button in the top left corner is so much easier to use than the chrome settings "gear" button. The menus are just more intuitive with Firefox, and it lags less for me.

I also love the downloads button on the upper right-hand side of the screen. It shows you all of your downloaded files easily and neatly. I like the epub addon to read ebooks in the browser and also the customizable keyboard shortcuts extension.

I'm sure chrome can do most all of that, but for some reason I'm just digging Firefox so much more.

I have to admit, though, I also prefer the fact that it's open source and not run by Google. It seems open source software has been catching up in many ways over the past few years. I use VLC and UMplayer constantly for everything ... movies, music, streams, etc. I still can't believe I actually uninstalled Winamp. I love DVD Flick, Handbrake, Libre Office, and a bunch of other open source stuff.
